I had booked my daughters 18th here for 10 people and paid my deposit dealing with Sophie who was lovely. when we arrived Sophie had done exactly what she had said she would had the table confetti and banner etc all in place. then we were told we must go down to the bar to order food and drinks, even though they had already served us dinks at the table. So what started out well seemed odd, I asked to speak to the manager and he arrived with a stern face and almost threw my deposit on the table in front of me ! He must've told the waitress off for serving us at the table in the area on the mezzanine that I had booked. He advised I should've asked if it was table service, I advised perhaps they should have explained this when I discussed and finally booked and that the waitress had already served us at the table with drinks and he was just sooo rude and argumentative I was shocked and said we were leaving. Three generations of my family on an important evening then left, we went to the Cosy Club and were treated like kings despite the fact that they didn't know it was my daughters 18th. The food was fabulous and my bill was over £400 which I was more than happy to pay and left tips. I will never set foot in HoS again and suggest the manager has a customer service course sharpish before he looses...
Read moreThe Head of Steam has quietly and quickly become one of my favourite boozers in the city centre.
The overall aesthetic strikes a nice balance between industrial and modern, with ample seating arrangements to cater for any size group. Food wise, the menu is varied enough to suit most tastes with each of the meals I've tried having been well worth the money.
As for drinks, the Head of Steam has one of the most extensive selections I have seen in Brum, with a solid lineup of rotating craft beers and ales across all ends of the spectrum. The range of house beers and spirits don't let the side down for those who aren't there for the craft scene as well.
One thing that keeps me coming back is the overall calibre of the staff. Everyone I have been served by at the Head of Steam has been nothing but accomodating and always down for a bit of a chat. The floor staff have been equally pleasant; maintaining a tidy bar and banter without being obtrusive at tables.
If you're in town, I'd definitely recommend the Head of Steam for a couple of cheeky ones on your lunch break, or a decent session...

Slow to get served. Staff not knowing who was next in the queue so serving people stood BEHIND those at the bar. Due to pubs now serving drinks in labelled glasses I waited longer for my drink whilst the barman walked around the looking for a glass (people really don’t care what is written on the glass).
Left after one drink and had a much better day in much busier and less expensive bars!
I’m not sure how to reply to you Zac, but just a few points as this review has somehow made the local paper!!!
It was a Sunday at around 2pm, yes it was busy but there was 2 people in front of me in the ‘queue’, 1 of those was already being served. 15 minutes for me to get served is way too long!
I didn’t order a Guinness, I ordered a Camden Hells, so why use Guinness as an excuse. Also, 10 seconds to find the right glass for my drink is wrong!
