This is a place that was formerly a warehouse, which as a young man, I used to work. Today you will find a trendy bar. Now my review begins, I walked in, and instantly was made to feel out of place, totally inhospitable to anyone but the in crowd. I enquired if beer was sold only to be met with a rather curt answer from the girl who was behind the bar. She told me that the bar was full of beer, my meaning was cask type ale. I acceded to her point and corrected my enquiry, and asked if real ale was served, a gentleman who also worked there told me that indeed Titanic Steerage ale was present. I ordered a half pint, not feeling welcome, nor feeling like I should invest in a pints worth of time here. I tried to engage the bar person in conversation, as the bar was empty, save for a couple of regulars at the end of the bar, what could it hurt? I informed her that when I was 16 I had worked here, as a warehouseman, I was met with a surly reply, and a distinct icy air, I did not finish my half pint, it smelt of eggs/sulphur aroma, and was not of good supping quality. My opinion, I would swerve this place, they, who were there, thought it the coolest place, to me it was unwelcoming, the beer was badly kept, eggy and sulphurous, and the staff, so unwelcoming, rude and curt, money is too hard to earn, to waste it in bad company. A sad tale, that happens to be true. Note: if your searching for real ale, the brewery tap, cannot be beaten on all levels.

December 2022: good selection of ales. Keg, cask, bottles and ciders. Welcoming friendly atmosphere. Could do with more seating. Incence burners set a lovely Winter feeling. Tasters and beer flights available. Dog friendly. Often overlooked. Is understated and well worth an amble down the side street on Commonhall Street, just off Bridge Street. Formerly called The Weighing Room, and before that, The Pelican. Owned by hester Race Company. Originally an old mill and Weighing Room, situated on Commonhall Street, which was named after an early type of court called the Commonhall of Pleas. The street was built in the 13th Century.

We hired the 'Loft' area for a private event and there were both plusses and minuses.

It's a really nice space with quirky, informal decor that is very pleasant and eyecatching. It's a comfortable and sociable room that creates a great atmosphere for your guests.

Booking and communicating with the venue via email was also good and they were prompt and direct with their responses.

The young girl who worked on the bar for most of the night was also great and did the best she could.

We did have a few problems whilst we were there though. I can forgive the room being very hot as it is at the top of the building and it was a very hot day, but I can't forgive the warm draft beer that was being served at the loft bar. Many of our guests had to go downstairs to get a cold drink.

We also had a few issues with the music (they have an outdated system) that we eventually got sorted, but the whole thing was stressful and gave the idea that nobody really knew what they were doing.

One of the staff also seemed a bit frosty with us and we weren't sure why. Perhaps they were just having a bad day, but it came across as unwelcoming. When you have chosen a venue to give your custom to, it would have been nice to receive a 'Hi' or a 'Welcome' when you arrive, rather than a stoney face and an unfriendly vibe.

Overall you should consider this venue for your event as it is a very lovely space and perhaps we just caught them on a night where things just didn't seem...

Great little venue, have been many of times, drinks are expensive (£7.50 for a pint of Polly's Floret) but have a good variety & don't mind paying for a decent pint/schooner. Always busy & always has a great atmosphere. Only issue lies with bar staff, I personally think if your face doesn't fit or if you are not recognised by a member of the bar staff they offer you service without a smile and are not welcoming. This is a big issue to think that the first interaction customers have when walking into a bar is with that of the bar staff. Now the owner/manager may be one of those I am mentioning in this review and I hope to god they are as they need to realise you will lose out on custom. I've always said if you are not happy in the job you are in, wether it be the hospitality sector or any other job role, get up and look for a job elsewhere, don't bring your problems to work and force them on members of the public who are out to spend their hard earned money at a bar they are hoping to be offered good service. Personally I got the vibe that we weren't welcome due to this and is a massive shame as the next time I head here and am offered the same service, I will not be going back nor will I again be...
