Costa Coffee — Restaurant in England

Ordered two coffees and was told just paper cups were available so I said that’s fine but rather have proper cups but none had been washed yet. Whilst in the queue a chap brought back fresh clean cups so I asked if I could have those now they are available before my drinks were made. They refused to give me them because they hadn’t caught up with cleaning though cups were now there to use? We had a discussion but they refused still and just moaned that they hadn’t had their break? No idea what that has to do with using cups?? Usually not a bad spot for breakfast. Went in on Saturday however and I had the brown toast and tea which was fine. My husband had the white toast and tea. Also he had a croissant. The croissant was stale so he took it b back. The waitress did she had opened then that day and they should have been OK. She offered him another but he declined. She did give him a refund though. He bit into his toast and that was also stale (I tried a bite and it did taste stale didn't try the croissant but it didn't look right) the waitress said again that every thing had been opened that day. I love the coffee at Costa, but I have made a decision to stop going into Costa as the last 3 visits to different Costa outlets have all been really disappointing. Each visit I've entered the shop to find overflowing tables, dirty floors and when you do manage to find an empty table they are always dirty and sticky. Costa must be saving a fortune by not having enough staff to keep the eating area clean and tidy, shame because the coffee is really good.
