Let me begin by saying we were firstly impressed by the decor of this establishment, which seemed very original, which in this current day is a refreshing element as part of any eating experience. Very clean, tidy, and complimented by well-dressed and polite staff.
I ordered the seafood platter for 2, and apparently, this was a new addition to the menu and their first order of this. It came and was very nicely presented with battered prawns, calamari, scampi, salad, and a generous basket of haddock goujons. I also ordered chips and curry sauce as an addition to my order. Seeing so much battered, I expected to be tired of eating this halfway through, but boy, I was in for a surprise. I ate every bit of it, and even by the end, I was enjoying every bite, mainly because this place's batter is a game changer. The batter is so light and doesn't in any way overpower the flavour of what you're eating. Every element of the platter was cooked perfectly, the prawns and calamari cooked well not being rubbery or chewy at all they were still so tasty and juicy (writing this is making me want to go back today for more) and the scampi and haddock were also cooked well giving different taste experiences for every bite I had. The chips are also something worth going back for. Initially, when I was presented with my meal, I wondered why the salad, but this actually helped freshening my palate during my meal.
I was considering a dessert when they recommended the browni with hot fudge sauce and ice cream, and even though im not a brownie fan, I ordered. Let me explain, I'm not a brownie fan due to most brownies being hard blocks of tasteless nothings, but omg, not this brownie. The brownie was just a soft block of chocolaty tasting heaven. ahhhhh, it was absolutely delicious, accompanied by a very tasty ice cream, and finished off my meal perfectly
I was lucky enough to speak to the owner, Rebecca, who is this very attractive woman with such a warm personality, lovely lass, as we say in the northeast. If you get the chance to meet her, you will see for yourself.
I must say that this meal was definitely worth recommending whilst we've also visted here and tried other menu items in the past which were also very good so please if your ever in scarborough and want tasty fish and chips (or any other of their menu items) you need to visit here because the food is outstanding and the decor is perfect providing a really nice atmosphere. All this was only surpassed by how lovely the staff were. Well,'Mother Hubbards' yous have created the perfect establishment for a true seaside fish and chips experience. Thank you, and we will see you again (soon,...
Read moreAfter a long day in Scarborough town, we decided on fish and chips for dinner, which I wasn’t too thrilled about. I found Mother Hubbard’s on the map app and, assuming it was the same as the familiar West Yorkshire franchises, we headed there.
Following the map, we arrived at what looked like a pub-style version of Mother Hubbard’s, which was so confusing. The restaurant was upstairs, and as we climbed up the stairs, I was regretting not going for Chinese food instead.
The interior had a pub-like / large spoonsy but cosy feel, and the menus were quite simple. I was already concerned because the restaurant was closing in five minutes, and it looked nothing like the Mother Hubbard’s franchises I was used to.
We placed a takeaway order for three at the till, and to my surprise, the food was ready in under 15 minutes. The presentation was excellent, everything was piping hot, and the portions were huge—three orders of fish and chips for under £30, each portion had two pieces of fish in it. Absolute bargain.
The service was fantastic as well. We had a great chat with the staff at the till about their batter recipe due to our allergies, and their lack of connection to the Mother Hubbard’s franchise. Despite being close to closing time, we didn’t feel rushed at all.
I can honestly say this was the best fish and chips I’ve had in a very long time. We were pleasantly surprised and will...
Read moreWe picked Mother Hubbard for lunch before we arrived in Scarborough because we knew they had a gluten free menu.
Please note, we visited on a bank holiday weekend, I'm aware that such busy times can make usual standards difficult to maintain.
Its hidden away between shops on a street close to the train station, there are steps up to the restaurant but fully accessible lifts.
The interior looks a little dated, but its clean, friendly and there was no wait for a table.
The prices are extremely reasonable, based on that and the portion size in relation, this is a star in itself.
I ordered a large gluten free haddock, the fish was delicious and fresh, but the batter was quite overcooked and greasy. The chips were tasty but felt a little "old".
I was pleasantly surprised with the amazing salad I ordered (I love salad with fish and chips and mushy peas!) and it was nice that salad wasnt considered an after thought.
In comparison to other gluten free fish and chip options I love (Wetherby Whaler, Murgatroyds) the food quality here was only 3 stars; but, the price and portion sizes earn it another.
I'd 100% go back, and really recommend this as a cosy friendly spot to eat away from the crowds on...
