After 18 months barely venturing out, and our seventh wedding anniversary coinciding with us both being double jabbed against Covid and the lifting of most restrictions, we decided we should do something nice – which for us involves food! We’ve been skiing for many years and for most of that time we’ve stayed at the same Austrian hotel, getting to know the family who own and manage it very well and during our last holiday there the owner mentioned that some other regular guests owned a restaurant in Chester – Moules A Go Go – which we had heard lots of good things about but had never visited. We resolved to go for a meal there on our return home, but 2 weeks later the pandemic arrived.... Back to the present time, and as we had got married in the same hotel, we decided we should celebrate a little more freedom by keeping to the promise to visit the restaurant for our anniversary which seemed to tie things in nicely – we could say hello to the owner and share happy memories on the slopes, so we booked a day off work and reserved a table for lunch. When I made the booking, I only mentioned that we had the Austrian hotel in common, but when we arrived, well, to say we had the red carpet rolled out for us is a very big understatement! The table, in a lovely corner window location, was covered in paper pine trees with snow on them; there were Happy Anniversary banners on the table and the staff – two really friendly, happy and efficient ladies, wished us a warm welcome and told us the owner – Sheila – would be there soon. But that wasn’t all, we had a lovely additional surprise brought to our table, which on a hot day was most welcome, and completely unexpected. Then we were handed the menu – wow – what a choice! As well as a range of home cooked fresh meals, there was a huge range of mussel dishes in various sauces, and we agonised over which to choose. I went for the 1kg Blue Pot, and Claire had the Thai – but we could have devoured any of them. We had sourdough bread and skin on fries to accompany, and when the dishes arrived, they were out of this world! Just before though, at the window appeared Sheila – dressed in a traditional Austrian Dirndl dress and wishing us a happy anniversary! Where else could you possibly even think of such a welcome! We were treated like royalty – from the table decorations to the lovely thirst-quenching gift on arrival and even the owner dressed in full Austrian clothing! And we still had the food to look forward to! We had a lovely chat and catch-up about the hotel, skiing, and life in general – and even though we had never met before we were so at ease and relaxed we can honestly say it was the best lunch we can ever remember having! Then onto the meal - a huge portion each, but also cooked to perfection, the main course mussels arrived. We enjoyed every bit of that meal – the flavours and presentation were amazing. And the fries and bread – wow – soft fresh bread and the crispiest fries ever. It probably took us close to an hour to eat it all, with regular chats with the staff and Sheila whilst we ate. We had planned to have a 3 course meal, which we changed to two courses when I opted for the larger main course, and then we had to try to find room for dessert! There was a perfect choice, but we opted for the Crème Brulee, as it seemed the lightest option and we knew it would be delicious – and we were right! The waitress brought it to us on a big wooden platter – again decorated with hand written good wishes for our anniversary! What a meal! What a restaurant – and what a welcome! We can’t wait to go back, it was the best tonic ever after 18 months away from normal life and the welcome we had, the surprises and the effort put in are things we can never repay but they were so appreciated. If you eat anywhere in Chester this year, support this fantastic lovely independent restaurant where the food, service and welcome are the best you will ever have. Thank you Sheila and the fantastic team and we hope to see you...
Read moreMoules a Go Go Bistro, located at 6-12 Cuppin Street, Chester, is a brilliant choice if you’re after a relaxed midweek treat. We went for Wine Wednesday — £26.95 for two courses plus a bottle of wine per order, with a choice of wines. I went for the Shiraz, which was smooth and paired perfectly with the food.
I started with the Pan-Fried Prawns, which were absolutely delicious — cooked perfectly and served in a rich garlic, tomato, and chilli sauce. The flavours were bold without being overpowering, with just the right kick of heat to keep it lively. I could happily have eaten a second portion.
For the main, I had the Classic Mussel Pot — fresh mussels in a beautiful white wine, garlic, and cream broth. It was rich without being heavy, with the cream giving the broth a lovely smoothness that worked brilliantly with the sweetness of the mussels. The portion was generous too, and the fries were crisp and perfectly salted for dipping.
The bottle of Shiraz was surprisingly good — crisp and refreshing, and it paired really nicely with both courses, making the deal feel even better value.
Service was friendly and efficient, and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.
If you’re a seafood lover looking for great value, quality food, and a choice of wine, Wine Wednesday at Moules a Go Go Bistro is a fantastic choice. I’ll definitely be back — and next time I might try one of their other mussel pots, though it’ll be hard to top...
Read moreWe visited Moules a go-go Bar & Bistro over the weekend, although, we had not booked, they managed to squeeze us in, which we were appreciative of. As advertised as part bar, we had only planned to go in for a few drinks - we are soon to be moving to Chester and were keen to find some nice restaurants/bars. When we advised the gentleman of this, he questioned us several times 'you're just having drinks?' and seemed perplexed by this idea - if we had been told on the door that we could only have attended, if eating, we would've moved on. Our drinks arrived, which were lovely, but within 5 minutes we were asked by multiple waiters/waitress' if we wanted anything else. The customer services we received here made us feel very uncomfortable, and rushed - as if we were an inconvenience. We completely understand times are difficult with Covid, however, the impression we got was that they were very limited for tables, and those available should have been allocated to those, who would be able to profit them, which seemed strange, when there were many tables available upstairs (unsure at to whether they were reserved). I really hope the experience we had was a one off, as we feel the atmosphere of the restaurant was brilliant, as was social distancing etc; and based on other reviews, the food sounds amazing! We just wanted to raise this, as we feel as though it could have been avoided with more clearer...
