Redroaster Cafe on St. James's Street is a great spot for dates, families, friends etc. The cafe is in a beautiful building, and the interior is minimal and refreshing. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. We have been to Lucky Khao, the evening restaurant in the same restaurant, plenty of times. We’re regulars there now. We finally visited Redroaster. We ordered the fig & burrata bruschetta, chilli crab linguine, steak frites, and eggs benedict. The fig & burrata bruschetta was a great starter, with the fresh figs and burrata perfectly complemented by the hot honey and vinaigrette. The chilli crab linguine was our favorite dish of the day. The crab was fresh and plentiful, and the sauce was well-seasoned with a nice kick of heat, but could’ve been spicier. The linguine was cooked al dente and perfectly coated in the sauce. The steak frites was also very good, with the steak cooked to perfection and the frites crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The eggs benedict was a modern take on a classic dish that was well-executed, with the hollandaise sauce being especially creamy and delicious. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly. The potato rosti was a nice addition, and it added a bit of texture to the dish. The artichoke chips were a nice touch, and they added a bit of crunch. Very different from any eggs Benedict I’ve had before. Overall, we had a great experience at Redroaster Cafe. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting. We would definitely recommend Redroaster to anyone looking for a great meal in Brighton. I’ve never once been disappointed.

My favourite cafe is Brighton, the Redroaster Coffee was closed for several months for a revamp. This week it reopened and today I went along. Here's my review: Not impressed by the glitzy makeover - styled somewhere between a cosmetic surgery waiting room, self-service canteen and a hairdressers. Gone is the feel of a continental-style literary cafe. Gone is any sense of this being a community space. No art of the walls any more - just mirrors to check your fake tan. Even the disabled loo now has a mirrored door so you can check yourself out before going in. I doubt there will be any more poetry evenings especially as by night this place will now be a restaurant. Loud music hits you as you walk through the door. The service as before is slow - which never bothered me - but is now at odds with the speed gloss of the decor and smart grooming of the (hired for being good-looking?) staff. A mirrored (again) slogan by the stairs claims "The Beach is Boring" but boredom is precisely what the new Redroaster inspires. You could be anywhere: London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Dubai. Anywhere where hype has replaced authentic, where chat has replaced discussion, where conformity has replaced individuality. One area of the old cafe that did need renovation were the leaky upstairs loos and these have indeed had a thorough makeover. But, as my photo shows, new does not necessarily mean clean! The new owners made much of Redroaster being a local institution and of wanting to retain its "connection to the community". I wonder which community they meant.

I was so hopeful about this place. The brunch menu, and the northern Thai dishes, betel miang is a big favorite treat of mine that's hard to find.... this looked like such a gem. Greeted warmly by the front of house staff, grabbed a seat in the garden, and then it started to fall off pretty quickly. Our male server took our order, 2 people, 2 beverages, 2 meals, 1 side. Not a whole lot to remember, but somehow my wife's beverage and my side were completely forgotten, but we weren't checked on in order to mention this. In fact, he seemed to ignore us intentionally. When he came to clear our plates, I did bring up what was missing, and he took it off the bill. Although, once I mentioned this, he was so short with us, as if we'd offended him by simply mentioning forgotten items. Word to the server, and the house manager, from a fellow restaurantuer, I would have much preferred an attentive service than to have items comped. Had one of my servers behaved like this to a queer female couple in a predominantly queer town, I would surely want to know. Had the service been even mediocre instead of offensive, we would have surely returned for multiple meals during our stay in Brighton.

Visited Redroaster on Saturday afternoon, as my friend had been there before and said the food was quite good. The atmosphere and decor of the Restaurant was nice and gave me good expectations.

At first the service was good, we were welcomed in and placed our order. However, from this moment on the experience took a steady decline. We where a party of 5, with each person placing a starter and main order. The food took a while to arrive, and when it did, it came in staggered waves (as if the restaurant was being run under the Wagamama's model) with dishes coming as soon as they are ready, which is ok as long as it is done in a timely manner. At first only two of the starters arrived, with a main following 10 minutes later for our vegetarian companion who had just finished her starter. Another 10 minutes went by till the 3rd starter arrived and maybe another 5 minutes till the final two starters reached the table.

It also became apparent that the vegetarian noodles that my friend had ordered had bits of chicken in it. Without making too much of a seen we went this back. But didn't seem to get much of an apology for this mistake. Her replacement dish came back probably around 5-10 minutes before any of the other main dishes had arrived. This dish also seemed to contain less vegetables that the one she had received prior.

The remaining dishes arrived, but some should maybe have been advised to have been ordered with a side of rice as they did not add up to a satisfying meal.

Looking around, it looked like other tables where having similar difficulties. With sides not arriving with the mains they where suppose to accompany, and only arrived after those tables had finished the mains.

I'm not sure if on this day, they where short of a front of house manager or head chief. But it felt like their wasn't sufficient communication going on between the staff. We didn't receive much in the line of service, only ordering one round of drinks. Simply because no one came back to us to ask how everything was doing and if we needed anything else.

We were a little disappointed that when the bill came the vegetarian noodles hadn't been comped? As this was a pretty bad mistake, and something someone else might have made more of a scene over. So in the end we asked for this to be removed from the bill, and reluctantly paid the automatically added service charge of 12.5% (approximately).

At the moment, wouldn't return or recommend, due to these reasons. As we all ended up visiting the Sainsbury's next door to by additional food to fill our fairly empty stomachs.

Would love to see them make some improvements and turn some of these issues around. As I don't like see businesses...

If I could put 0 star I would…We went out for a friends birthday Sat night (2nd April). The whole experience was appalling.

The waitress serving us was the most disappointing part of the evening, I don’t know her name as she never introduced herself. She was very rude and short with the whole table. She messed up drinks orders, she dropped all our food to the table, but instead of stating what the dish was and passing it the appropriate person, she threw the food down and then told us to organise it between ourselves. Majority of us hadn’t been before, so we didn’t know all the dishes so it became a guessing game. A few of the party ordered the same chicken dish, however one was severely burnt. We notified the waitress and she was very short and told us that’s how it’s supposed to look so get on with it. I understand that BBQ’ing food will leave some burn, but this was honestly charcoal, comparing it to all the other same dishes on the table. She then grabbed the plate and offered to help in a very rude manner. In any normal instance we would have gratefully agreed, but there was genuine worry that something would be done to the food if it got sent back to the kitchen, so the food was kept and the salad part of the meal was eaten. Furthermore, I understand that meals come out when ready, however, the whole table had finished eating and we waited about 15-20 minutes for 2 final main dishes to turn up, where we then also got notified of missing deserts. The last complaint was when the waitress came to take payment, she asked how much was going to be paid by each person, no answer was given within her short few second fuse, so she abruptly grabbed the bill off the table and made a comment under her breath, stating that she’ll have to work it out for everyone then. Her attitude and manner was disgraceful and I’m shocked she works in hospitality. She may have been having a bad day, but don’t bring it to work and don’t take it out on your guests.

I never write reviews like this, but this was a real low for what was supposed to be a joyous evening of...
