Ye Old Custom House — Restaurant in England

The pub looked lovely and a lot less overcrowded than other places which gives me anxiety so we thought we would give it a try, we ordered two drinks then I decided to buy 2 shots with it being my partners birthday, I could not believe it when two shots cost over £9 and it was over £23 in total, there were no drinks menus or prices anywhere but the food menus has reasonable prices so we thought the drinks would be similar, we were very wrong, maybe we should of asked first but we felt embarrassed and didn’t want to be judged if we asked the price first, after paying we went on the website to find out why it cost so much only to see that it cost £9.50 for 3 shots so basically we paid the same price for 2, my partner went to question this and they said it was our fault for only ordering the 2 and not the 3, however this is the first place we have been that does not have prices anywhere, we just felt like we were completely ripped off and the service wasn’t a nice experience especially on his birthday. We were also disappointed that for such a clean looking pub there was wee all over the men’s toilets floor, the staff seemed more busy talking than caring about anyone that was not a regular customer, did not feel welcomed at all and would not return, leaving feeling very disappointed, ripped off and put a downer on...

We had a carol concert at the cathedral and naively took our 3 month old baby without thinking how busy it would be. We booked a meal beforehand at the Old Custom House and as we left home the baby needed feeding. The Old Custom House were extremely accommodating in moving our booking. Upon arrival, the manager greeted us and chaperoned us through the bar with the pram ensuring no Christmas revellers were in the way. The atmosphere when she did was lovely, everyone moving out of the way of the pram and extremely polite.

The gentleman who took our order the bar was the same person who rearranged our booking over the phone. He took the time to double check the change in table was appropriate for us and asked whether we wanted to open up a tab.

All in all this was a very quaint pub with a lovely atmosphere. The staff are amazing and this is reflected in the people who drink there. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone as, for me, that’s what a good pub is about…it’s people!

Next year we’ll get a baby sitter and return, this time having a few drinks too.
