Metrodeco is totally unique. Described as "Brighton's only 1930s Parisian-style tea salon and art deco furniture shop", it's pretty much just that. The antique pieces range from tea sets and gilded mirrors to chaise longues, coffee tables and ornate chairs. Thanks to the owner's discerning taste, they are all gorgeous and in fantastic condition. They're also priced more than reasonably - £150 for an original art deco chaise longue is really great value. With chandeliers (also up for sale), a light airy room and jazz playing quietly in the background, I really didn't feel as though we were sitting in a furniture shop drinking tea. Metrodeco is all about the tea and they stock 21 varieties of the stuff. It's lovely to hear people speak passionately about the things they love, and the staff at Metrodeco were no exception. I think they know everything there is to know about tea, and that shows in the care they take with brewing each pot.If Metrodeco was in my corner of South London I'd be there every weekend. The staff were so hospitable, the teas delicious and it's a really beautiful space. If you ever wander a few minutes from The Lanes then do drop in for a cup of Terracotta Sunburst...
Read morePopped into Metrodeco this morning for a bit of brekkie and a pot of tea and was very pleasantly surprised. Boasting a rather fabulous menu with some interesting eats rather than the mundane run of the mill breakfast standards (Scottish breakfast looked super!) I plumped for the pancakes with crispy bacon, fried egg and maple syrup. Plump would be an understatement in describing what I got - or perhaps it is the state of the eater post meal?! A pile of the floofiest pancakes were topped with an egg that oozed majestically over them as I sliced in to it. The new chef, Al Studd seems to have brought the same magic to breakfast items here as he did to seafood in his previous venture at The Gothic Crab. Needless to say, I and my friend rolled out of there having stuffed ourselves silly.
Just in case you need more convincing to visit, the cold cabinet was full to busying of delectable treasures including the biggest croissants filled to saturation levels with ham and cheese. In fact, I might have to go back for lunch! Highly recommended a visit. Super smiley and attentive staff too which makes all the difference. Didn’t get a photo, too...
Read moreMy housemate and I discovered Metrodeco last year and have been regulars ever since.
Tucked away at the top of St James's Street in Kemp Town, it is a bright, welcoming place to stop for tea after a day of shopping but is such a pleasant, enjoyable place to be that it easily warrants a trip for its own sake.
Their delicious array of teas and infusions are extremely reasonably priced and presented beautifully - particularly in the case of Parisian Floral Calm, which is served in a glass teapot with delicate china teacups, all for £2.20. They are by no means let down by their cakes, all of which are freshly made and generously sliced.
The eclectic decor is fascinating and if you're particularly taken with the furniture you'll find it's almost certainly available to purchase. The staff at Metrodeco are what makes it so charming, however, as they are all exceptionally friendly, welcoming and chatty, and never seem to forget a face.
Dog lovers in particular will love it here, as pooches are always welcome and have their own selection of snacks to enjoy.
Absolutely, unquestionably one of the best places to visit...
