I was just passing by but remembering that Brighton is a haven for vegan diners, I looked up what was around and found this place. It was highly recommended on Happy Cow so we dropped in. The first problem was parking. It's a great location but Brighton is extremely expensive for parking. We parked in a street nearby and had to pay £10 for the pleasure. Not their fault but an additional expense to be aware of.
It's a simple place, this little take away, with some seating for dining in. I opted for the latter. The cod and chips was sold out so I went with the smoked haddock. After a short wait, a fine looking "fish" and chips was brought out to me. The vegan haddock was fine. The batter was crispy and tasty. The filling was very edible though not quite the consistency of fish and a weird sweetness to it, kind of like someone had added a layer of maple syrup between the batter and the filling. It was nice enough but I would try something different next time. The chips were to die for. Wow! My wife, not vegan, remarked on how good the chips were too. They made the meal. I wasn't tempted by dessert, battered Oreos. The meal for one and a soft drink came to about £17 so not cheap but reasonable enough given this is not standard fare. It does reinforce the notion that you need to be reasonably well off to afford to be vegan.
Overall a nice place with very nice staff working there. They were doing a roaring trade and there were food delivery drivers coming in to collect meals the whole time. Clearly...
Read moreI came over to Brighton especially to try the fish and chips at No Catch and I am very disappointed for the restaurant not sticking to their opening timings. I was really looking forward to trying out this restaurant, especailly since I have been following Ed since the past few years. We got there on Saturday at 8.10 pm and the restaurant refused to let us even get food to go. Then today Sunday we tried to order at 6.22 pm and they were closed for delivery. When the restaurant shuts at 7pm.
I find it frustrating when vegan restaurants have such limited opening hours. While I understand that they may have their reasons for doing so, it certainly does not make it easier for potential customers like myself to enjoy their cuisine, especially when we vegans have such límited options.
Overall, while the food and atmosphere of the restaurant may be exceptional, its opening timings have certainly left me with a negative impression. I hope that the restaurant and Ed takes note of its customers' concerns and considers extending its opening hours to accommodate more diners and customers.
I have given it a 5 star as it still is the best fish n chips, with a hope they improve...
Read moreThe first time I visited it was 5 Stars for the food. We had the battered sausage, chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and lemon shrimpies. My son had the deep fried oreo for dessert.
The second time we went I spent just over £50, yes that's right, just for the two of us. We were both very disappointed with just about everything. We had 2 x large tofish and chips £13.99 each, 2 x tartare sauce 99p each, calamari £5.99, shrimpee lemon £6.49, 1 x carton apple juice £2.00, 1 x can ginger beer £2.55 + a service charge for the food being carried over to our table.
The tofish didn't have a nice taste or texture, it was thick and slimey and the batter wasn't crispy but soggy. The chips were like fat sponges(the first time we had them they were hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside). There were 6 small calamari rings which works out at £1 each, not great quality or value for money. The tartare sauce was okay. The shrimpee lemon was the only item that was okay in this meal.
The toilet isn't great.
My son's meal arrived after mine. Noone asked if our food was okay. Not a good start to our holiday....
