First, I want to thank you, Charlotte, and Daniel (who met briefly on our second visit). We came to the Nocturne by chance for the first time while visiting Buxton. My wife, daughter and I had just had lunch and walked past Nocturne. We decided to go in, and we liked the décor, which was full of music and artistic decorations. We ordered coffee and a pistachio cookie. I had a cortado, but after ordering, I noticed a selection of worldwide coffee, including Vietnamese coffee. My wife and daughter were playing a game of chess, and I was sipping my coffee, reading a book, and having some cookies. The taste of the coffee was top-notch. I drink lots of coffee, but I am no expert. I am always fascinated by people with a passion for doing things they enjoy; business is only a by-product of their passion. I could see that in Nocturne. I then explored the website and learned they do music lessons and teach people how to make coffee and do latte art. Something I would never have thought of doing. But I thought it would be an excellent occasion for us three to make memories as a family. Charlotte was accommodating as I told her the reason for attending the latte art class. We participated in the class a few days after our first visit, which lasted for 90 minutes. It was meant to be 75 mins. Initially, we thought about having family time together and doing something different. Right from the beginning of the class, we realised there were many more details and nuances about coffee making, and each of us took turns learning different steps: making coffee, steaming milk, and making the pattern. It was a thoroughly enjoyable time. Charlotte was very patient with us. We are staying about an hour away, planning our next revisional class, and can’t wait to revisit Nocturne! Oh yes, we are looking for a manual espresso machine as well!!!

Creating a real atmosphere in a coffee shop is not an easy thing. So many places have nice coffee or nice food or just nice people. Never before have I been to a coffee shop that serves such fantastic coffee and amazing food in such a brilliant atmosphere and served by people that truly care about what they do (as opposed to the mindless robots in any coffee shop chain). I've also never been to a coffee shop and had two flat whites in a row, seriously the coffee really is that good. The Nocturne deserves more than 5/5 in any review. Oh and you can learn to play the piano as well!

Absolutely gorgeous cafe. The food (home made cakes, croissants etc.) and coffee are excellent (beans roasted by the cafe themselves!), and there are a wide range of other drinks, such as luxuriant hot chocolate, beautiful home blended Chai, iced teas and more. All this coupled with live piano music, poetry nights, self published book library and a warm welcome from owners Charlotte and Daniel. You must give this place a visit. You won't regret it. Wood fired pizza comng soon too!

Piano Lessons with Daniel Dudek at The Nocturne Cafe, Buxton.

Daniel is a talented, very capable musician who also happens to be an excellent teacher. Combining practical instruction, illustrative demonstrations, hints and tips with good, clear and useful explanations of relevant theory means that, in the time I’ve spent with him, I’ve developed more quickly, and learned far more, than I could realistically have hoped. Daniel’s approach encourages and develops a realistic confidence, which means I’m now able to tackle pieces which, previously, I would have regarded as too complex or beyond my capabilities. Whether you’re a complete novice looking for someone to help you get started, an existing pianist wanting to improve your technique and capabilities, or a serious student intent on working through intermediate and higher grades, Daniel provides tuition, support and valuable help to achieve your goals. Very highly...

Nocturne is an odd place

Despite being brand new, there is way more polish than would normally be expected, with a lot of rustic/industrial charm

Despite it being away from the main "independent" area (although only 2 mins from the A6), it offers top notch in-house roasted coffee, and snacks and sandwiches from one of the high end bakeries nearby and is significantly more authentic than many other so-called indies

And despite it being in the middle of a mostly closed former high street, it has all the signs of it being a fulcrum to see the area renewed, and should you want to see a return to a more community orientated environment, its exactly the kind of place that we all need to see more of

So if you like good coffee, excellent food and a relaxing place to sit and read a book, you can't...
