We returned to Buxton post Covid for our Anniversary staying locally to enjoy what is to us a very lovely place with many memories. It was decided that we would go to the old Sun Inn as it was local to our location so off we went. Outside there are signs telling that this pub did indeed do food(menu on the wall and signage) so we thought brilliant. My partner sat down as I then went to the bar to find out the situation etc unfortunately this is where it all went sideways. The lady that was at the bar was just pouring a pint so I asked politely about food to which she said something to me about 5 o’clock which tbh confused me so I thought best to clarify by asking for an explanation, this wasn’t received very well at all but she said “we start serving food at 5 but you won’t get a table as we are very booked up” It did come across quite rude and with a slightly negative attitude to the fact as far as they were concerned they had clients and weren’t bothered and that’s where we then left. At no point was I expecting this so needless to say somewhat disappointed by her lack of customer service and her attitude. I’m not happy that people possibly think that because they have custom that anybody else can be spoken to in this manner. I have read the reviews for this Public house so I’m not entirely happy to have to leave this one but I will always...
Read moreHaving visited Buxton on many occasions we were in need of sustenance on our trip and wanted somewhere dog friendly. Our daughter googled and checked reviews in the rear of the car then gave us turn by turn directions till we saw the pub. We parked at the nearby High Street car park and wandered back to the pub. On entry we were given the warmest of greetings and were shown to a nice table in the corner, perfect for our friendly canine companion. We settled down with the menu and a bowl of water was brought for the dog. The decision were not easy as the menu looked great with so many nice dishes on there. After much to-ing and fro-ing I settled on the Beef roast dinner, my wife had the burger and my daughter had the children's scampi and chips. The food arrived and we were not disappointed, proper homemade Yorkshire puddings filled with gravy, well cooked roast potatoes, stunning red cabbage, succulent beef and I could go on. The other dishes were just as nice and clean plates all round. I was unfortunately to full for pudding but the others had the warm fudge cake and the chocolate brownie and I was assured they were again stunning. Throughout the visit the staff were friendly and attentive and all 4 of us were made at home. Definitely will be returning when we are in the area in the next...
Read moreHeading to see Francis Rossi and wanted somewhere to eat and grab a pint. Booked a few weeks earlier and had regular re.inders of our date and time 29/5 and 5pm ... great.
The sign said open at 4pm but the door was open at 230 so we wandered in and the bar was indeed open ... just because it was a very sunny day. Pint of Pedigree and a non alcoholic lager (from a small selection of options) and sat outside the front of the pub in the sun. Come 5pm we went inside, asked the waiter for his recommendation and he said without pause ... steak n Stilton pie! Freshly made today! Great ... we will have 2.
WOW ... lots of pie and amazing flavour. We are from St. Helens so we know our pies!
The food was lovely, staff friendly and very helpful, beer obviously good and the place was spotless. We would highly recommend the pub and pie!
Only slight negatives. On a bright day outside the pub is dark inside ... so take your sunglasses off before you go in! ... and such a shame thst out side the front of the pub the main A road has a constant parade of slow moving or static traffic outside.
The only reason for 4 star atmosphere was ... we visited between 2.30 pm and 6.00pm on a Tuesday! Everywhere lacks atmosphere then.
But overall ... we loved it (and Scriveners pre loved books...
