Ok, so, I was wandering past after a tiring and busy day, thinking 'nearly at hotel, but need the the loo'. Popped in here, and 6 hours later had had a brilliant dance, met 4 great women, had a glorious intergenerational flirt with a golden haired angel called Ben, heard the sharpest, well I don't know what... Rock funk?...on a good sound system by a great Californian band. All fuelled by a terrific lineup of beers, with a good quality/value pasty to help me cope with trying each beer. Huge, HUGE shout-out to Chandler on staff (this is spelt wrong, I'm sorry) and Simon who were solid, charming hosts. The building is beautifully preserved and unfannied around with (technical term) and super well managed. Now I know I got extra lucky with Darnell's band, but honestly, an unexpectedly brilliant place. I hope I get to live in Leeds. This place and night topped off my 3 days here. Please note, the price range I chose for this review reflects how much beer I drank: lots. It's not...
Read moreLovely boozer, the person who said the front room is too dark is missing the point. If you can't see the pumps ask the person what's on. There's a blackboard with them all on as well.
My minor criticisms are: there should be cushions in the snug as the original seating is extremely uncomfortable (defeating the object of a snug) and the pub can be under-heated (which again defeats the object of a cosy ale house). The lager choices are drab too.
Other than that, there's a lot to admire. Characterful layout, concert room in the back, increased outdoor area, very well kept ales to the point where I have hardly ever had a bad pint there. Nice mix of people from rockers to office staff nearby. Off the beaten path enough to avoid the corporatising that has happened to other pubs closer to the centre. The tiny kitchen puts out some cracking food too at times. Been going since...

Me and my friends usually visit on a midweek evening which provides a steady steam of customers and a vacant dartboard.
A few jolly pints whilst we compete on our own league makes for a good night. A visit for the beer alone is well worth it. Pub serves food throughout the day and a glance at the menu shows simple honest pub grub at decent prices. Pork pies available all day from local supplier and are very tasty.
Only problem I seem to notice is during the winter months when the stove is lit on the bar area there is always an expert customer who can never seem to leave the fire alone!
A must visit for every real ale fan or those on the lookout for a traditional boozer in a city...
