First and foremost, I have to praise the service at this Indian restaurant. Run by genuine Indian people who care about your comfort and needs - really a farcry from the order/eat/push-out-the-door culture of nearby Brick Lane. Top notch on the politeness stakes. The dishes were decent, if a little sweeter than expected. The greatest thing about their menu is a large majority of the dishes can be converted for vegans. It's a slight shame none of the naans could be adapted, perhaps using coconut oil, but not an issue if you're a rice person too. Having sat downstairs, there's a certain privacy afforded away from the bustle of the street level. However, at the same time there was something missing in terms of the atmosphere: perhaps it was music or just a general sense of busy-ness (we dined on a Thursday evening, which had plenty of empty tables, so although booking is possible over the phone, I wouldn't say it's necessary on a working weeknight in The City). The other thing is there is no accessibility for disabled or poorly-mobile visitors to reach the lower floor. This is fine because you'd likely be positioned at street-level when dining or drinking, however, the lady's bathroom is in the basement level so this could potentially be troublesome for female wheelchair users, for example. These are just some things to be aware of. Obviously it's difficult to acquire enough retail outlet space in prime locations in London to accomodate things like electric wheelchair lifts, but considerations around accessibility are ethically vital in London. Despite these points, 1947 is doing a great job. If the menu accomodates more naan options for vegans and is shifted to a more savoury palette, I will return.

1947 is hands down one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve visited in London, and I have been to a few... What makes it stand out is not just the food, but the whole experience. This isn’t your average Indian spot, it’s a place that serves proper hearty dishes with real depth of flavor, beautifully presented and cooked with care. As a vegetarian, I was especially impressed by the range of vegan and vegetarian options—each dish tasted fresh, authentic, and bursting with spices that felt perfectly balanced rather than overwhelming. You can tell that the recipes are made with thought and tradition in mind. Every bite felt comforting yet elevated. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a family-run restaurant where guests truly matter. It’s elegant without being pretentious, and the atmosphere is relaxed enough to really enjoy the food. A special mention must go to the exceptional waitress who looked after us. Her attentiveness and genuine friendliness made the evening even more memorable. She made us feel at home and added that personal touch that’s so rare to find. If you’re looking for a tasteful, authentic, and heartwarming Indian dining experience in London, 1947 is the place to be. Highly recommended

Well for starters this is an family restaurant, the amount of support each of them provide each other is magnificent. So I visited London recently and was craving for Indian food that is where I spotted 1947. For starters 1947 is the year India got independence and that caught my eye so I thought of giving it a go and later found out it serves only vegetarian food and that shook the soul out of me, like why don't you sell non veg food. But after some chit chat with the family I thought f giving it a go ..... Well how did it go ....... Amazing I never knew that I would start craving for veg food. The food is so delicious and the desert 😍😋 ice goula something like that highly recommend. Well in a nutshell 1947 is a great restaurant that serves Indian food and you should give it a shot.

I would recommend everyone to read through the reviews before going here, because the disappointment of the food will have you thinking about it for days. First the minute we came in the lady in the bar was staring us down very rudely as if we had done something wrong (we are black maybe she just didn’t like us because of our skin colour). She didn’t even specify to us that butter chicken and chicken tikka masala doesn’t come with rice (which is very weird to begin with) since obviously we weren’t planning to drink the sauce like it is, so we had to order rice on top of that and of course the rice was tasteless and dry. The best thing about this whole experience is how we thought we would get chicken but got some expired weird tasting tofu in our food, on top of that it was very spicy (again, could have been avoided if the lady was nice and communicative wit us) we didn’t even finish our food, the cheese naan didn’t have any cheese it was bland and dry. The customer service was so terrible, as tourists we want to try new places and nice food but instead we got the worst experience of our life. Also to the lady working behind the bar when someone clearly puts their hand out so you could hand them the money back you don’t slap the money on the counter and smirk, black people be aware of this woman, the chef was very nice though.

It is the right restaurant, i was staying at travel lodge london central this happened on saturday so just take the review to better your restaurant than trying to make us the...

As a person of Indian origin, I’m very fussy about Indian food and sceptical about Indian restaurants. However, as I eat a plant-based-vegan diet, I thought I’d try this and it surpassed my expectations! Have been back since and every dish so far has been great. I like it spicy and it was a good amount of spice. A good kick but not over the top. They can reduce it to medium and mild if need be by the sounds of it.

They have both veggie and vegan options with majority either vegan or able to make vegan. You have classic meat dishes like butter chicken made for both veggie and vegan but also your classic chickpeas and okra dishes too.

As a vegan, it was great to have more choice like this. Will definitely be back to try more dishes!

Also, very impressed with how fresh the food tasted too. All piping hot when you receive and don’t miss out of the chaat menu. Had a couple of those and all amazing. Particulate recommend the Dahi chaat and look forward to discover more.

If you’re veggie/vegan and love Indian food then don’t miss this place. Guarantee you will be full when you leave!

I would recommend booking a table as I’m not sure how big it is as there are only few tables on ground level but there seems to be more seating downstairs for...
