First off; the food & coffee are great and worth a visit except for the one piece of credit card thin toast.
But yeah the service is clunky to say the least; whoever’s doing staff training isn’t doing their job properly.
No one’s properly keeping an eye on the door, was waiting for a while before I just sat myself down. I got a warm friendly smile from the girl who gave me the menu, she made a special effort to get me the coffee how I like it. Then the guy took my order but he couldn’t understand what I was saying when I asked for no feta. The food arrived before the coffee, not ideal but was very nice, but one waifer thin piece of toast wasn’t a good look. food was very nice the pesto and mushroom definitely made it better :) I asked for 1 more piece of toast and was brought a whole bowl of toast, maybe this is a good thing or maybe the guy just didn’t understand what I was saying. The table was cleared but didn’t come back to clean any the debris leftover or wasn’t asked if I’d like anything else👎🏻. Then I wanted to pay but the staff vanished off the floor. The decor is brilliant and the food/coffee is great but it just needs tightening up and a slicker service, especially for the area it’s in. I work in hospitality so I understand the challenges the management team and owner are probably facing, but staff training is everything....
Read moreAs a longtime fan of Boxcar in Marylebone, I have been really excited for this location to open as I live literally one minute away and was looking forward to making it my local coffee spot. However my first experience was not OK. I had an oat cappuccino and as expected, it was great. Then ordered a bottle of sparkling water and paid my bill, but was looking forward to sitting a bit longer and enjoying my water. I quickly went to the loo and when I came back I saw that my table had been cleared and a new customer had already been seated in my place. My coat, which I’d left on the back of my chair, was gone so I also had a moment of panic (my phone and wallet were in my coat). The staff told me that they thought I’d left and forgotten my coat, so they put it in the office. I’m sorry, but what? Isn’t it more likely that the customer has simply gone to the bathroom, not left the cafe without their coat in winter? The staff were apologetic, but didn’t offer to replace my bottle of water and there were no tables available so I left disappointed. Why I give this rating, we asked for a coffee and matcha.
Coffee was ok, normal coffee nothing special.
Matcha was not ok at all, as soon as it was on the table we asked why it had that colour and waitress said, it was the normal colour (matcha is green, this one was yellow). Waitress took it back to the barista who said, this is a matcha and it’s how we do it, you can taste it and if you don’t like it we make a new one.
I believe, it was a good intention to say this anyways, it was not a good matcha and even more we showed them their own photos on instagram and it was properly made. They should have just made a new one instead of bringing it back.
Anyways I write this review because we told them on the day that it was not alright and paid it anyway even though we didn’t ask for a new one, because of their reply and we didn’t have it, they should have made a note.
Hope they improve their matcha and coffee too.
As well, out of all the pastries, which looked really nice, they only had one vegan...
