Eight of us arrived dead on time, then waited several minutes to be charmlessly acknowledged (most certainly not greeted with a warm welcome), then waited again to be seated. Bad start.
My chosen wine was unavailable - but still on the menu. Situation deteriorating.
Thirty five minutes after our 7:30 arrival the desultary staff finally deigned to take our order and only now told us that Ramsay's "Beef Wellington" signature dish had already sold-out. By 8:05!!! My expectations of a good evening were now just about rock-bottom.
Five of us reluctantly settled instead for bog-standard but ridiculously expensive steaks, two ordered baked cod and one ordered ribs. More on this below.
Our first courses were a mixed lot. Two of us thought they were "ok" but the other six of us said the dishes were not as described on the menu with extra or missing ingredients, and/or meanly small. All of us thought them expensive and poor value.
The steaks were two large cuts for sharing. At least half was bone, fat and gristle. Very disappointing and very average. Certainly memorable but for all the wrong reasons.
The cod dinners were delivered almost 15 minutes after the steaks with no apology for the inordinate delay. They were edible, but barely, and both my guests gave up after a few mouthfuls. After tasting what they'd left I was surprised they had managed as much as they had. Perfectly ghastly.
The ribs were very good, in fact the highlight of an otherwise (being generous) mediocre meal.
Four of us decided to avoid further disappointment by not ordering desserts but four of my party, self-evidently gluttons for punishment, forged ahead only to mostly regret their decisions.
The meal took over three, long, drawn-out hours and cost £775 for eight of us after the restaurant voluntarily reduced what we were charged for meat and waived the charges for our side orders. Without these concessions the bill would have exceeded £900 or £125pp. A fair price would be half that or less, and can readily be found in many London restaurants.
Bread Street Battersea is hideously noisy when busy and, really, has little to commend it (especially when Beef Wellington is not available) apart from its interesting (?) location within one of Battersea Power Stations old turbine halls. But even this is a questionable attraction as the underground parking is expensive although avoidable by using public transport or a taxi.
There is a lot wrong with this restaurant and it is quite remarkable that Gordan Ramsay feels qualified to tell others how to run their restaurants while one bearing his name is quite as bad as it is, a fact bourne out by many other reviewers. At the very least he needs to appoint a competent manager. And sort out his Beef Wellington supply chain.
I'll not be returning anytime soon, which I regret. I'd suggest anyone reading this goes to Roxies (in Wimbledon, Putney and Earlsfield) where one can eat good steak and drink extraordinarily well for under £50pp, and park nearby...
Read moreStep into a realm of unparalleled excitement and indulge in the extraordinary experience of London's newest shopping and leisure destination - the reimagined Battersea Power Station. This iconic Grade II* listed landmark, now transformed into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, has captured the essence of innovation and elegance. Among the array of enticing establishments, one culinary gem stands out: "Gordon Ramsay Bread Street Kitchen and Bar." As a seasoned food critic, I had the pleasure of visiting this renowned restaurant, nestled within the heart of this dynamic location, and it left an indelible mark on my taste buds.
The stylish and inviting ambiance of the restaurant immediately caught my attention upon arrival. The blend of historic charm and modern touches created an atmosphere that exuded sophistication and warmth. However, I must admit that the strong and unpleasant odor of fish in the air was quite appalling. When I inquired about it, a staff member acknowledged the issue, attributing it to ventilation problems in the old building of the Battersea Power Station. As a patron, I found this explanation unsatisfactory, as it detracted from the overall dining experience. Despite this initial setback, the attention to detail in the decor and layout of the restaurant was commendable, contributing to a delightful place to unwind and enjoy a meal. Moving on to the menu, meticulously crafted by the chef, it showcased a fusion of delectable flavors and innovative culinary techniques. Each dish presented was a work of art, pleasing both the eyes and the palate. However, I was disappointed to find that both side dishes, the Buttered Spinach, and Honey Roasted Carrots, were served cold instead of the expected warmth. I brought this to the attention of Vlad, the manager, who graciously acknowledged the mistake and promptly replaced the dishes. The prompt response and willingness to rectify the issue were commendable and a testament to the restaurant's commitment to customer satisfaction. The service, overall, was impeccable, with special recognition for Kuwar, whose knowledge of the menu and willingness to offer recommendations enhanced the dining experience. In conclusion, my visit to "Gordon Ramsay Bread Street Kitchen and Bar" at the Battersea Power Station was a mix of highs and lows. While the ambiance and culinary artistry were noteworthy, the issue with the odor and the temperature of the side dishes did detract from the overall experience. Nevertheless, the restaurant's attentive service and their gracious gesture of removing our drinks from the bill in light of the inconveniences demonstrated a commitment to their patrons' satisfaction. With a few improvements, this exceptional establishment has the potential to shine even brighter in London's most exciting new...
Read moreBeing a big fan of Gordon Ramsey, I took my partner out for a meal at his new restaurant in Battersea. On arrival, we were provided the menu and served drinks.
It's unfortunate the restaurant does not have at least one draught beer for the bar, as when we ordered a bottled larger it was just above room temperature. However; the server happily replaced it with a cocktail so there are no issues there.
The food was absolutely delicious, but with a few criticisms. Both the cost of the food and cocktails was reasonable for the location, as well as the branded name. The presentation was beautiful and clean, and the plates were not overloaded or underfilled.
We started off with the mushroom soup and the salt and pepper squid, which had no complaints and was a decent portion to not overfill us, or leave us too hungry for the main. The squid was crispy and was not saturated in oil, with a light seasoning.
For the mains, we ordered a Sirloin steak and the Cumbrian pork belly. We initially had a problem with how the steak was cooked, as we ordered medium rare and it came closer to medium. Understandably, for the price of it we'd expect what's been asked. We were happy to be told wrong by the chef if they disagreed, but they were happy to accommodate cooking another steak to be rarer. The second steak was cooked perfectly; but unfortunately, the silver skin was left on which made parts of it more chewy than desired.
Lastly, we ordered desserts to finish up on. We went with the sticky toffee pudding and the Cranachan cheesecake. The pudding was the best my partner has ever had. It was delicious, fluffy, and moist. The cheesecake was still tasty, it was different to anything I've had, however it had the texture of mousse or whipping cream rather than a standard cheesecake. I'm not sure if that was the intention of it, or not.
Finally, I have to say the service was not as efficient as it could have been, and seemed rather clumsy. On multiple occasions we'd ask for a drink, or in the end the bill, and the server would acknowledge us and then would not serve us. We'd wait for 10 minutes, only to see them get distracted with another table and forget serving us. We had multiple servers throughout the night, which probably added to the confusion. We also had our starter dishes taken away from us and we were given the dessert menu before our mains had come, which another server then took the menus away. Once we had ordered desserts, the server took them to the wrong table. This isn't the end of the world, but it does add to the disorganisation of the service we experienced.
Understandably it's a new restaurant, but with a chef like Gordon Ramsey's name attached to it, only the best would...
