Came here for a post-work dinner with some colleagues. I had booked in advance over the phone a week prior but were still given a table outside when I had insisted we have an indoor table. I let it slide as I didn't want to start an argument and the weather was somewhat passable for an early-May Tuesday evening.
We were sat down and had very little time to view the menu before we were approached by the waiter to took our food and drinks order at once. At this point I knew this was a very quick turnaround kinda place which always frustrates me as I dislike being rushed when eating out. I'm not just paying for the food, I'm paying for the experience!
We ordered some Cobra's, cold starters of the pork knuckle and shredded chicken and sweet and sour pork ribs. For the mains I ordered the Beef Biang Biang noodles and my colleagues ordered the Chicken Biang Biang noodle soup and Sweet & Sour chicken with Egg-Fried rice. The food arrived incredibly quickly and we hadn't even had the chance to finish our starters before the mains arrived. I personally would have preferred it if we had been given the time to finish our starters.
The starters tasted great with my only gripe being that the pork knuckle and shredded chicken were overly drenched in oil which seemed unnecessary. Couldn't complain at the pork ribs.
The Beef Biang Biang noodles were the star of the show. I'd never had this type of noodle before so was excited to try them and boy was I not dissappointed. The dish itself was simple containing the Biang Biang noodles which were flat, almost the width of a reel of old style camera film and were perfectly cooked - not too soft and not 'Al-Dente', just right! The noodled were tossed with a specially seasoned sauce with chunks of slow cooked beef and pak-choi. A very hearty and delicious meal. My colleagues has no complaints about their meals.
The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is due to the rushed service. It's very off-putting!
However, if you do happen to be in the neighbourhood and want something different from your usual anglicised Chinese affair,...
Read moreI know its a very long review but all I can say to resume it its: Do not go to this restaurant. Find somewhere else to have lunch/dinner. Where to start with this disappointing experience... 1.When my and my friend first arrived on the restaurant we asked if they have vegan options to what they answered with a yes. We were handed the menu (with no vegan options on it) and then they informed us they only had a "vegetarian noodles option and they could remove the pork of a rice dish" When I asked if they could just maybe put some mushrooms or more veggies on it or at least reduce the price of the dish as they were going to remove the pork they said a rotund NO. Anyways we ordered it. When I asked to one of the waitress if they had student discount (all of this before they would bring the dishes ) he ask to see my student card. I showed it to him and he just stared at it for a while and said the person in the photo does not look like me and hand it back at me. Pretty rude. Fine, when the dishes finally arrived, (and after I asked for soy sauce and they said it was not vegan so i could not have it??? I had to insist for it) I was just about to start eating when , moving the food with my fork i found a little dead fly on my food. I immediately told my friend to stop eating as there were a dead insect on my food, we called the waitress and said it might be the wind that brings insects. I told him I did not wanted the food anymore and to please call his manager. A younger waitress came, did not even gave us an apology, removed all our plates from the table and said "Its all cancelled". After that, we left, disappointed and angry for such disrespectful treatment.
(why would the insect be dead by "flying " into our food ? , Also i found it by removing the food.) rudeness , unhygienic , and not vegan friendly. PS: Sorry if there is anything wrong written in my review, as English it is not my...
Read moreMy first time here, I walked in 20 min before closing and was served warmly. It was still busy but food came out quickly. I saw the manager counting out the till so I offered to pay first but he said no, no rush, 慢慢食 (take your time eating). Honestly, uncommonly gracious for a Chinese restaurant (esp one staffed by the usually-brusque Cantonese!), and that impressed even more than the food.
Had a terrible day today and stopped by for lunch. Two off-putting things: first, if you order dry noodles like their signature Biang Biang Mian, it’ll come with a fork and (Western) spoon in the bowl even though there are chopsticks on the table. I ordered dumplings too and the biangbiang mian are quite saucy, so I asked for a tang chi, the Chinese soup spoon. According to the waitress, those are reserved only for those who order soup noodles. So you’re left eating with the awkward combination of chopsticks and metal spoon.
At 2.20pm, with half a bottle of coke left, and a half empty dining room, the same waitress gave me the bill unprompted. I’m used to this in Chinese restaurants when it’s busy and there are people waiting for the table, but this wasn’t the case. I even enquired if they close for a break before dinner — they don’t. This left an incredible sour taste and was such a contrast to the service on my first visit.
If you’re getting dumplings, order the pork wontons in chilli sauce rather than the boiled dumplings which taste one step above frozen.
The waiters generally run an efficient shop and the food is fine but nothing to shout about. Pop in if there’s no queue but I wouldn’t bother waiting. If you’re in the area and want Xi’an food, theres also Murger Han and...
