My wife and I visited your beer garden around 630pm yesterday. It was not busy. Finding a clean table proved difficult, but, after calling a waitress, a table was given a wipe down for us.
We ordered 2 drinks. Quite expensive but in line with most Canary Wharf restaurants. We finished our drinks. We wanted another. We waited. And waited. Despite a large staff complement, only 2 waitrons appeared near our area, but we were unable to attract their attention and I do not liking shouting to do so. We waited. I noticed staff standing in the entrance doorway. Half of the beer garden is slightly obscured from the doorway, but staff are aware of this. I eventually got up and walked up to the entrance. 3 members of staff were talking and laughing next to the empty tables about 4 metres from the entrance. Just inside the entrance, two bar ladies were leaning on the bar counter from the inside, another was leaning against it from the outside and 2 more waiters were next to her. That's 8 serving staff members, besides the 2 who had been spotted, standing around without much concern for those customers requiring service.
I asked to speak to the manager who turned out to be the lady leaning against the bar counter from the outside. I explained our unhappiness with the lack of attention. Not much concern was expressed, no apology was forthcoming, rather it was hinted at that it was partly our fault for not being within their line of vision.
We ordered another round from a very helpful waitress, one of the two we had noticed serving before.
Service levels and waiter attention increased threefold.
I had noticed my card had been charged with unusual amounts. All prices on the menu were rounded to 0 or 5 pence, but the totals not. In checking the menu, at the bottom,in tiny and faint print, was "an optional 12.5% service charge will be added to your bill". So, it's optional, but WILL be added, and it had been, but without the stated option first being offered to the customer! After, very politely, challenging this illegal charge and unacceptable practice, the surcharge was refunded. I would routinely have tipped a similar amount and am sure many patrons do, unwittingly, add a further tip without knowing of the surcharge.
Is this the sort of underhandedness that the hospitality industry now stoops to in London. The price you see is not the price you pay. This experience was enough to spoil the occasion. Why not just put the all-inclusive price on the menu - they are so high anyway - no-one will notice - and at the top of the menu state "welcome - prices include a service charge. Imagine the goodwill it will generate instead of the negativity that the current practice produces. And most customers will still...
Read moreWe booked a table for this place. Upon arrival we weren't seated. The waitress said she will check if we can sit outside and left but never came back. There were 3 group of people behind us and they started to get a table. So we just sat down somewhere. We ordered 2 portions of schnitzel and my sister ordered a third one for take away for her partner. However, when she was eating she kept saying it is tasteless, it's not nice at all and she doesn't really like it. She did eat most of hers because she was hungry and she didn't want to make a big fuss of it, however she decided not to take the other one for her partner, because she was sure her boyfriend won't like it either. When she wanted to return it, the manager came. My sis asked for a refund or at least 50% discount from the take away food. He said he is not giving any refund or discount. When my sis was talking to him, he was smirking. We tried to explain that she ordered it at the beginning in good faith, thinking it's a nice food, but it wasn't and now she wants a refund on the untouched food she ordered to take away. He then called me "my love". I told him I am not his love. He said he is just "polite". I told him, calling a female customer "my love" is not polite at all. It's actually patronizing, sexist and an expression that is used to belittle women. When I said I will leave a review, he was mumbling "I think you will never be satisfied" under his nose. I found it very rude and questioned him about it, but he didn't say anything. We asked if there is someone there who is above him, his boss or anyone, he said no. My sis told him it is very sad because there is zero customer service or customer care. He offered another food instead of the refund so my sister ordered another meal for take away at the end. But we were really not happy with this sort of attitude and "service" and we will never ever go there or order again. Before this, I was planning to take my partner there for a dinner date, but after all of this,...
Read moreOne of the highlights was definitely the abundance of food. We opted for the Bavarian sausage platter and a mixed platter, which included an enormous pork knuckle and schnitzel which I particularly enjoyed. The portions were absolutely enormous. We were a group of five, but ordering the two platters (each platter is designed for two people) was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. We left absolutely stuffed with (sadly) lots left over.
We enjoyed sitting outside in their courtyard, which has a great relaxed vibe. The platters came with plenty of salty chips and bowls of salad accompanying the platters. There was a surprisingly small amount of sauerkraut, and whilst the platters came with jugs of gravy and curry sauce, it would have been even better to have had condiments with the food (mayo, ketchup etc).
The staff were a bit slow at times, often leaving us with empty drinks. We requested additional drinks, which didn't arrive, requiring us to flag down another staff member and reorder. one member in our group had an egg allergy, and it turns out wasn't able to have any of the sausage or the schnitzel, and they had run out of a lot of the main meal options including the goulash. She ended up with a vegan schnitzel which she wasn't very impressed with.
Overall it was a memorable dining experience heaps of Bavarian food, and a great...
