A few years ago, I visited Rice and Pot when it first opened in Elephant & Castle, and my impression at the time wasn't very strong. Now, I've discovered that they've actually opened a new store in Soho, so I decided to go with some friends!
I must say, they've really stepped up their game, both in terms of menu design and the variety of dishes. It's a significant upgrade from the Elephant & Castle branch a few years ago.
For example, they now offer a wide range of milk teas and fruit teas, and there are many more choices when it comes to clay pot rice and rice noodle rolls. The entire restaurant has a trendy and Instagram-worthy vibe, perfect for taking photos.
We, two people, ordered three small dishes, two clay pot rice dishes, one milk tea, and one bottle of sparkling water.
⭐️ Foie Gras and Chinese Sausage Clay Pot Rice
The star of the menu, three thick slices of foie gras are beautifully laid over the fragrant, grainy rice. Beneath them, there's a generous layer of Chinese sausage, drizzled with a touch of sweet soy sauce. The foie gras surface showcases a golden caramelized layer, glistening subtly. The moment it enters your mouth, you can feel the rich taste of foie gras flooding in like a tide.
The rice is aromatic, and there are crispy bits at the bottom of the clay pot. Mixing the Chinese sausage, rice, and soy sauce together and enjoying it with the foie gras is simply delightful!
🦐 Malaysian Spicy Seafood Clay Pot Rice
Actually, it's not very spicy, just a hint of spice with the aroma of shrimp paste. It's topped with a variety of seafood, including fish, shrimp, and mussels. The rice is slightly softer, and unlike the other dish, the crispy rice bits at the bottom of the pot don't come off easily.
🐙 Octopus Salad Small pieces of octopus, refreshing salad leaves, and mango sesame sauce; this combination is truly refreshing and helps balance the richness of the other dishes.
🥗 Ginger Broccoli Using long-stemmed broccoli that's crisp and tender, the ginger sauce is very appetizing. It pairs perfectly with the clay pot rice.
🥚 Assorted Marinated Platter It includes a marinated egg (cut in half), three pieces of tofu, and three chicken wings. The marinade is very flavorful, and it goes well with the clay pot rice. The tofu has a great texture, with a crispy, honeycomb-like shell from frying. After soaking up the marinade, it bursts in your mouth.
🥭 Mango Pomelo Sago Packed with mango flavor! There are also some pomelo bits and mango pudding inside. When the ice melts a bit, the sweetness is just right. One bite of clay pot rice, one sip of mango pomelo sago, and you'll be...
Read moreHaving seen some foodie influencers promoting this place on Instagram I wanted to come here to try it out myself as I have been craving some authentic Cantonese claypot rice. We made a reservation prior for a Monday evening but tbh it wasn't really needed since it's a weekday and it's pretty chill.
We went for the sweet soy marinade platter as a starter and also ordered a mixed sauce cheung fun on the side. Must say both were pretty disappointing and didn't taste authentic at all. The soy marinade was too weak and could tell they hadn't marinated it long enough to achieve that dark colour. Chicken wings were tender but the overall dark soy taste just wasn't enough. The cheung fun was way too salty with too much sauce poured on the all over the rice noodles. In an authentic Cantonese restaurant the sauce should be served separately in small dipping bowls so you can mix the cheung fun according to your personal preference. This was simply all mixed together in advance and the cheung fun itself was way too plastic-y. It's just not even on par to what dim sum restaurants serve in Chinatown. For mains, since one of my friends was vegetarian we went for one mushroom and truffle claypot rice, and then my other friend and I shared another Chinese sausage and chicken claypot rice. Now the claypot rices were a lot better and actually tasted pretty good. Particularly the Chinese sausage one was really well-marinated and portions were generous. With the soy sauce on the side a lot more flavour was added to the rice and we enjoyed scraping off the sides of the claypot to get crispy rice bits which if you know is always the best bit of claypot rice. The mushroom one was good but more mushroom flavour would have enhanced the umami flavour, alongside more truffle oil.
Service was great, Li was a fantastic staff member who made us feel very welcome. She was extremely friendly and smiley and made sure we had a good time. One of my friends had her birthday and we got her some cakes which we had asked to be stored in the kitchen's fridge for dessert and they happily accepted without charging us extra for storage. Li even served us the cakes nicely on a plate and made sure the cakes looked presentable for our photo purposes. A massive thank you to Li for her professionalism!
Overall, it was an okay meal for me and I would be happy to come back but just to eat the claypot rice. As the only restaurant in London that served Cantonese claypot rice, this was a...
Read moreWe had such a great experience at Pot and Rice! The service was excellent, especially from a waitress named Li. She speaks Cantonese and English, and was incredibly attentive—helping us choose dishes based on our group (me, my sister, and my aunt), our budget, and our preference for lighter flavors. She gave thoughtful recommendations, discouraged us from over-ordering, and patiently answered all our questions throughout the meal. Honestly, this is the kind of service that makes the service charge worth it.
🥤 Drinks They offer an unlimited bubble tea deal for about £8 per person. The three of us ordered 8 drinks in total—every single one was delicious, no misses at all.
🍴 Food Highlights
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Claypot Rice with Chinese Sausage & Chicken: Classic Cantonese flavor with tender chicken and sweet, fragrant sausage. The crispy rice at the bottom was amazing once mixed with sauce (make sure not to leave the lid on too long, or it’ll get soggy). My aunt even said she wants to bring more relatives here just for this dish!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beef Udon: Fragrant XO sauce flavor, tender beef, and chewy udon noodles. Comforting and satisfying.
⭐⭐⭐ Braised Platter: Soy-braised chicken wings and tofu. Tasty and authentically Cantonese, but not a standout unless you’re specifically craving braised dishes.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Soft-Shell Crab Spring Roll: Wrapped in Vietnamese rice paper with fresh herbs and a touch of pomegranate. The crab roe was especially delicious—rich and flavorful.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Crab Roe Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Rolls): Absolutely outstanding. Thin, silky rice rolls filled with popping crab roe, served with light soy sauce. The texture was perfect—tender yet bouncy, just like the ones I remember from childhood in Canton.
🫖 Extra note from my aunt: She usually avoids tea because of the strong flavor and sugar, but here every tea was balanced, not too sweet, and easy to enjoy—even for someone with high...
