Had a pretty good Sunday lunch here, although some definite areas for improvement. On the plus side, we were a group of ten, and our pre-ordered food was served promptly and without any problems. Several of the mains looked fantastic and the people who had them said they were delicious - the pie and the roast beef Sunday lunch went down particularly well.
The downsides: four of us had the vegan roast, which really paled in comparison to the meat one. First of all the vegan sunday lunch arrived and was a lentil cottage pie, not the vegan tart it says on the online menu; no one told us it would be different. It came with kale, sad boiled vegetables and red cabbage. The meat option came with all those vegetables, plus a yorkshire pudding, gravy, roast potatoes and a separate cauliflower cheese, for the same price. A vegetarian/vegan option ought to have alternatives, not just most of the dish taken away. Wouldn't have thought it'd be that hard to at least do some vegetarian-friendly roast potatoes or gravy.
The desserts weren't great and the pizza was quite terrrible. It looked and tasted like a cheap supermarket oven pizza.
We only had one waiter and he did a great job of looking like he really didn't want to be there. Never smiled, when we asked if they had any vegetarian gravy he said 'there is no vegetarian gravy' and walked away, plonked a bottle of white wine down without pouring it or giving us a cooler.
It was a shame a few of the courses and the slightly surly staff let the meal down as lots of our group really enjoyed their meal (and they'd probably rate it higher than three stars). The room we were in was nice (once we asked them to turn the giant tv showing ITV off) and £15 for a sunday lunch, dessert and alcoholic is undeniably a...
Read morePutting this on here mainly to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have historically enjoyed the cock and hoop (I even stayed in the adjoining hotel before my wedding), but I’ve had two strange experiences recently. The last two times I have been here, I have asked for the daily deal advertised on multiple signs - the first was a pizza and pint deal in March, and the second was their wine Wednesday deal today. On both occasions, I was told that the deal was no longer running, despite the sign being outside (one of which would have had to have been actively put out that day). On the second occasion, I was told the deal had come to an end two weeks ago - in which case, why was the sign out? To further thicken the plot, their Instagram post exactly 2 weeks ago (the day I was told the deal had been cancelled) advertised wine Wednesday, with no indication that the deal was coming to an end. I find this baffling, and really damaging to my opinion of and trust in the pub. If you are not running a deal, that is fine, but you should make sure you are not advertising this deal. It may well be that I was just unlucky, but the repeated incidents makes it feel as if the deals...
Read moreSo impressed with this place. Visited for afternoon tea yesterday afternoon, a Saturday in February 2023. After a really dreadful afternoon tea experience with the same friend at a completely unrelated place in the midlands in December, we really didn't know how this one would go . . . but the whole experience was wonderful. The welcome was efficient and incredibly friendly. The staff knew exactly what we had ordered - a gluten free tea, and a vegetarian tea. When the tea was delivered the amazing waiter went to great lengths to pass on a message from the chef to my gluten free friend that it had all been prepared separately for her, the tray wiped clean etc - which was a truly lovely, and reassuring touch, very professional. The lunch was tasty, with a good selection of sweet treats. The prosecco was light and pleasant. We were checked on so many times, to make sure we didn't want - or need - anything else. It was perfect. The atmosphere was that of a friendly local, clean and comfortable. Thank you for a lovely experience. Oh yes, and the prices were very...
