Let me do all future visitors to Alamogordo a big favor & offset the locals' reviews, because this is NOT a 4-point-anything restaurant! It may not even merit an average of 3. A quick word about the non-food things: service was reasonable, but nothing special. Decor is super dated, ceiling tiles show a lot of water stains & hand-written posters everywhere make it feel like a place you want to get out of quickly, not sit down for dinner. Maybe they do a lot of take-out business, but I should've taken a hint from the completely empty parking lot at 7pm and gone somewhere - anywhere - else.
First, the egg drop soup that was included with my main dish (rice is too, which I declined). The first & most forward flavor was oil, followed by fish. How this happens to egg drop soup, I have no idea, but I was not off to a good start. 0 for 1.
Next came the gyoza, even though I'd ordered a sushi appetizer to "come first". The gyoza were surrounded by a strange spongy substance that appeared to be a fried web holding my six little dumplings upside-down on the plate. I later learned that, despite the odd appearance, this is not unheard of. In fact, it's apparently tasty when it's crispy, which as I mentioned, this was not. Probably because the gyoza were already room temperature. How one can fail to serve something fried in hot oil still hot to the table, I don't know. The dumplings tasted good, but their lukewarm temp and the spongy web made them the second flop. 0 for 2.
Third, yellowtail with jalapeño. Unfortunately, this was served with my main dish, so I was stuck letting one get cold or the other get warm - a place in which I hate to find myself. I opted to eat the fish first, assuming my wok-cooked main would stay hot-ish long enough to get to it. The first problem with the fish was its odor. Yellowtail should not smell noticeably fishy, and this did. The second problem, immediately obvious to anyone who likes heat, the "jalapeño" was strips of skin with hints of flesh inside, cut from between the peppers' ribs. Peppers' heat, of course, is mostly in the capsaicin glands, with some in the ribs & seeds. The flesh & skin? Almost none, or in this case, absolutely none. Seriously - sweet green peppers, nothing more. 0 for 3.
For my main, I ordered Happy Family mostly because I wanted meat & vegetables, and everything else was meat + 3 broccoli florets. With a larger party, you could order their vegetable plate, but I was just me, so I had to compromise. I wish I could upload pics to accompany this review so everyone could see the totally unnatural color that the mussels were, but let me just sum up this dish by saying it was boring, overpowered by the seafood and, again, not served hot. Oh, and the broccoli looked to be at least a week old. 0 for 4.
In summary, I honestly struggle to figure out how this place didn't go out of business long ago. Who are these people raving about the food here & how desperate must they have been for anything even resembling Chinese food or sushi. If you have ever had even average quality experiences with either, this place will disappoint. If you've had truly good examples, Mizu will fall completely flat. I tried a variety of things here, from the soup pot, the sushi counter & the wok, and they were all well below par. I recommend avoiding it until you're truly desperate for Asian food, then driving to El...
Read moreI’m not really sure what made other people’s experiences so good because mine wasn’t that great at all. The food itself wasn’t bad but it did upset my stomach. I ordered a steak hibachi plate, on the menu it comes with various sides: noodles, salad, rice and I believe veggies. The only thing I got was the rice. My husband ordered pho and a side of rice. He had to ask multiple times for the rice to come out, it never showed up. The topping plate for his dish (bean sprouts, jalapeño, etc.) also came out way after getting his bowl of pho. We also ordered an appetizer that came out after we were already almost done with our actual dinners. We waited and waited for someone to bring us our check and acknowledge that we were done. Eventually got tired of waiting and realized no one would be dropping off our check or taking our payments (even though it was done with other customers). I don’t think I will be trying Asian food again...
Read moreWow, what a pleasant surprise, this place served authentic Thai food and Chinese (that's what we ordered) but we saw other tables get really good looking Pho. Turns out the chefs are half Japanese and half Thai (hence the name). The food was spicy and tasty. We had a mic of vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters and they did a wonderful job catering to all our requests. They were short staffed so we had to wait a little bit but the service was still very courteous and on point. I wasn't expecting just great Asian food in Alamogordo!
They even let us pack the amazing chilli oil (made by Grandma) and the chilli powder,
If I ever come back to Alamogordo I'm eating here.
Dishes were ordered: Thai green curry (vegan) Pad Charlie's special (vegan) Chicken fried...
