I don’t like leaving negative reviews but I have been sitting with this for a week and I think it is worth sharing my experience to prevent it from happening to someone else who is vegan or vegetarian. Last week I ordered fried vegetable gyoza as I had multiple times before. When my server brought out the gyoza, I took a bite and immediately was concerned that they gave me the meat instead of veggie one. Every other time I ordered these I received gyoza with cabbage and other vegetables. One of the waitstaff checked that my server rang up the correct order. I was still concerned that there had been a mistake so asked my server to please double check with the kitchen. She checked with the kitchen, looked in the gyoza and told me it was “definitely the soy one,” but their menu only shows a vegetable gyoza and meat gyoza, no tofu option, so I was confused. I was very uncomfortable finishing the dish because I was still confident that it had meat in it. It seemed that my server’s priority was to insist she was right, even after I had voiced outright three times during my visit that I was worried about my order. I have been vegan for ethical reasons for over five years and it is very distressing when I consume animal products by my own mistake or someone else’s, so I was very shaken up about it and decided to leave rather than asking for a refund.
I called the restaurant later and talked to Tiffany, who was not the manager, and while I asked to speak with the manager, Tiffany insisted she could handle the matter. She said that she was “100% confident” that whichever waitress served me did serve the vegetable gyoza and that “sometimes the vendor brings a different vegetarian gyoza with soy meat instead of just vegetables.” I tried telling her that I have been vegan for years and could tell the texture and flavor of real meat from soy, and her response was “it had to have been the veggie one.” I don’t know how she could have been so confident that the staff had not made a mistake. I was concerned that the menu didn’t reflect the different types of gyoza that might be available on a given day and she said that 150 menus would need to be changed (even if it confuses, as she said, “lots of people”). I was able to get a refund for the item, but the way I was treated both in the restaurant and over the phone was upsetting and unprofessional and I hope that the staff take customer concerns more seriously...
Read moreI hate to leave one star reviews but unfortunately this place deserved it. My boyfriend and I visited Kanbu a few weeks ago after a Michigan game for a quick lunch. It took us around 10 minutes to be seated although there was only one occupied table in the restaurant, but that was no big deal. We were seated and given menus, and waited around another 10 minutes to receive waters & have our order taken.
We ordered the pork gyoza and a bubble tea, along with some sushi rolls and a stir-fry dish. The gyoza was very good, some of the best I’ve ever had. The bubble tea was not bad, either. I didn’t try the stir fry but my boyfriend said it was good. The sushi, however, was a disappointment. We shared a snow crab roll and it was the worst sushi I have ever had. The crab did not taste fresh, the roll was warm, and it had zero flavor. I ordered spicy mayo with the roll just in case the flavor was lacking, and never received it from the server even after asking for it twice. The other sushi rolls were just OK.
We received no service at all. The wait for our food was very long, and after receiving the food the server never returned to our table. We had to ask the host for our check. We will never return to...
Read moreI came here specifically for the sushi burrito. I ordered the Kanbu Burrito and asked for the chef’s recommendation of sauce (I can’t remember what it was but it was slightly sweet and came on the side).
This summer I went to a sushi burrito place (sushioko) that had $11-13 burritos that were filled with fish/other great ingredients. The kanuba had great ingredients and tasted fresh though it was slightly smaller and slightly more expensive $15.50. (This is probably offset by the fact that it had more ingredients and came with miso soup or salad) The dish in my opinion needed something spicy with it (Im used to wasabi or some slightly spicy sauce) so if I went back I would probably try a different sauce. While they gave plenty of extra sauce on the side pouring it onto the top of the burrito ended up making a big mess over the paper and my hands. I wish it was put in the burrito when they made it, although some may prefer to self apply so that’s understandable.
Overall great burrito, probably the most sushi with tuna/salmon you can get for $15 in ann arbor. Plus the miso soup was flavorful and not to hot to eat when served.
I ordered takeout but they were prompt and it was a good experience...
