Skout Taphouse & Provisions — Restaurant in Ashland

We ate the other evening at Skout. The serving staff was wonderful, and we enjoyed our food. I always approach a business directly if I experience an issue, and did so, but heard nothing back from Skout... so FYI: I ordered a lemonade ($6.00!), without ice. I was handed a very small glass, and was confused as to why $7 beers are served in a large glass, but mine was so wee. A wonderful waiter politely explained that staff are instructed to serve a drink ordered without ice in a small glass. (My issue is NOT with the server, who was sympathetic.) I've never encountered such a blatant admission that we're all paying for ice in drinks, and am appalled at how small a SIX DOLLAR portion of lemonade is. Seriously, it left –no pun intended– a bad taste in my mouth, and doesn't seem worth what bit an establishment saves (a minority of people order without ice). Our meal? $75 for two "starters", a bratwurst, and three, non-alcoholic drinks. A bit stiff for us, given that mean ice policy. Sigh. What a sad, disgusting, and absolutely unacceptable scene at Skout today. This place has gone far downhill. Your staff and their treatment of customers, us and others included, was completely unacceptable and shameful. I really hope you have a meeting with your staff on today and make sure it does not occur again. No, hour-plus wait times are not normal, and your cashiers should stop taking food orders if you're that far behind, or at least inform the customers about it. Their friendliest response was, "You can order another beer and wait longer," to guests who had already been waiting for over an hour. Those who wanted a refund, had to return back to line to wait on this refund. A few left without ever receiving their food or refund. Heck, they would run orders to now empty tables that still had a number on it, and then just let it sit there. After an hour and 10 minuets, we were served cold dirty fires. What...

Skout has a fantastic location and the atmosphere is really great. It's a popular spot near Lithia Park with a large and impressive selection of adult beverages. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a place to grab a drink and hang out. My experience with the food was a mixed bag, though. The garlic truffle shoestring fries were absolutely delicious and the highlight of the meal. However, I would pass on the fry sauce and the smash burger was a bit disappointing. The patty was cooked well but was pretty bland, and the potato bun was a letdown. It was firm and tasted a bit stale, and it seemed like it hadn't been toasted at all, which made the burger feel pretty uninspired and dry, especially with no sauce. Overall, it's a solid place for a drink and the fries, but if you're specifically craving a great burger, you might want to consider ordering a different menu item or heading somewhere else.
