The original location is amazing no notes! Five stars GO THERE! As for this one give them 6 months from the date of my posting to get their legs…otherwise you may leave feeling that the brand has been totally weakened by this location, as I did. I’ll likely go back and give them another try down the road as I work in the industry and understand it takes time to work out the kinks, that said as someone from the industry there are top to bottom management issues. My staff was nice enough, and I feel like I may have caught the restaurant on their worst day, but waiting 20 minutes to be spoken to after being seated, after waiting over an hour to be sat….unacceptable. 15 more minutes to order and ask for a refill on our waters which we drank all of almost instantly because we’d just waited over an hour….unacceptable. 15 more minutes to receive that water after walking up to the bar and asking for it CUPS IN HAND! Literally tiny Tim style “please sir beg you a drop of water” we were REFUSED and told it would be brought to us and they didn’t come for another 5 minutes. INSANE. Babes the restaurant isn’t full and I’m looking at two managers live their best life. They were clearly understaffed but I expect management to step in and pick up the slack if that’s the case. At that point, the sunken cost fallacy was deeply in effect for my group and we were too weakened from our wait to start the process over at another spot on the beltline, but we probably should have left. Also worth noting that Another table that came in after us and was a larger group that ordered ate and left before we received our entree. The food when it finally arrived was good but not worth the time and service concessions we made to get to it. I know they will get better but stay away until they do, if you’d like to keep your impression of the original intact. If you’ve never eaten at the original on Buford, go there...
Read moreIt’s a new restaurant so they’re definitely working out some kinks, and maybe we just went on an off night. This review is more for management on a couple things that could have improved our experience.
First off, seems like they’ve got a great crew. Our server Alyssia was amazing and pretty much everyone we interacted with was great.
Something that would have been super easy and improved our experience immensely…it’s a Friday night, we’re coming to have some drinks and a good meal. We waited in line to see the host, put our name on a list for a 30 min wait as expected on a weekend. We decided to pop next door and grab a cocktail while we wait. Got the text our table was ready, downed our drinks and headed over. It wasn’t until we were sat that we were made aware that they don’t yet have their alcohol license yet. Our server informed us that we can always bring in a drink from another nearby restaurant since its open container on the beltline. I wish that the host had told us this!! It would have really changed everything, and wouldn’t have taken long to inform us so that we could have planned accordingly. Also would not have had to chug our cocktails at our waiting spot only to come here and wish we’d brought them.
Think they’d benefit greatly from water carafes on the table. We drink a lot of water (especially without a beer lol) and it wasn’t from lack of attentiveness they were often empty, the restaurant was just busy and we were thirsty.
The kitchen is definitely still figuring things out, especially with such a different crowd and completely different expectations that come along with it here on the beltline verse their Buford location. I was done with my meal by the time my boyfriend got his. The food was very good! We just decided we will come back in 6 months when they iron all...
Read moreThe new Northern China Eatery, an upscale reimagining of the cherished hole-in-the-wall that redefined Chinese cuisine for me, has been open for a month, and it’s a fascinating evolution. The original spot was a culinary sanctuary, where the food’s soulful depth made the world fade away. This new venture carries that same passion in its cooking, but it’s not quite the transcendent experience of its predecessor—yet. The food here is different, trading the gritty authenticity of the original for a polished finesse. Dishes still burst with bold, layered flavors—think crispy-edged dumplings and fragrant, spice-laced noodle bowls—but they feel refined, almost restrained, as if tailored for a broader palate. It’s still excellent, some of the best Chinese food I’ve tasted, but it lacks the raw, unapologetic intensity that made the original a legend. Where the new eatery stumbles is in its service. The original location’s staff exuded decades of hard-won grit and warmth, making every meal feel like a singular moment where nothing else mattered but the plate in front of you. Here, the service is professional but lacks that soulful connection. It’s efficient, not immersive. However, one gentleman—not our waiter—stood out. His presence carried the same dedication and care that defined the original, a quiet mastery that hints at what this place could become. I’ll be asking for him when I return. A subtle shift in service—infusing that same sweat and heart from the original—could elevate Northern China Eatery to a tier of its own. For now, it’s a worthy successor, but it’s not yet the legend it aspires to be. Still, the food alone makes it worth the visit, and I’m rooting for it to...
