I had a very disappointing experience with Malaika, despite her claiming to specialize in curly haircuts. I made it clear multiple times (6-7 times) that I wanted to avoid layers while my hair was straight, and asked for a blunt cut until it was curly to account for shrinkage. I specifically requested a pixie cut but wanted control over the shape, which is best achieved by cutting curly hair once it's dry and styled, not while straight. Any curly cut specialist would know this.
Instead, she cut my hair into multiple layers while it was straight and didn’t inform me until she was finished. She told me to “just trust her,” but as I later discovered, she had cut the hair above my head and hid the uneven lengths by placing them behind my head. When my hair shrunk after washing, it became clear that the cut was a mess—there was no style or shape left.
Additionally, she rushed through the appointment due to double booking and the fact that another client was upset and behind schedule. This led to her cutting about 12 inches of my hair off quickly and carelessly, skipping important steps in the process.
The result is that my hair is extremely uneven, and I’ll have to wait several months for it to even out and grow back. I am now left to wear wigs for at least the next 4 - 6 months because of this, which has cost me hundreds of dollars. The wig stylist I visited afterward was also confused by the outcome. I would caution anyone considering this stylist to ensure that she truly listens to your requests and make sure to bring a mirror with you to be an audience to her work, especially for curly haircuts. This experience has been extremely disappointing and...
Read moreMy experience with Malaika @ Aviary in Old Fourth Ward was unique in that this was my first appointment and I went to the wrong location. Found my way to the right location and felt horrible. I threw her schedule off and will forever be sorry for that.
Yet, in spite of my boo boo, she was patient, kind, and professional. I had a hard time parking when I finally got there. Malaika actually walked to my car to help me park. Then I couldn’t get straight with paying the parking company online and she had to help me with that (am a senior and don’t do well with online transactions). Personally, I would have told me to go and come again another day. She did my hair anyway and took her time and did not rush. I am very pleased with her work. It was in rough shape and she took great pains in cutting and styling. Am grateful to Malaika and the young lady at the front desk for their longsuffering with me. I promise to do better the...
Read moreFirst class. I’d like to share the wonderful experiences I’ve had at Aviary since the pandemic allowed businesses of this nature to reopen. I’ve been twice in the late summer. Each time I went, the owner and staff greeted me warmly, openly, but also with professionalism and safety in mind. All were wearing mask and upon entering I was welcomed immediately and with hand sanitizer. It was such a relief that this small business made my safety as well as their staff as the top priority. I mean, I had a facial! So if that’s not as close as you can get, I don’t know what is. But I always felt safe, had the option for the aesthetician to wear gloves, etc. Also, the Hydrafacial was sooo worth it. (I could go on about that too). They also carry Biologique Recherche which is a highly covetable skin line. If you know, you know :) Please do not hesitate to book an appointment with them. You’re skin will...
