I visit from DC once a month and my goal is to try an mom and pop restaurant particularly Black owned. This month my treat was Caribbean and heard that this place was fantastic . The service was excellent and the portions although packed in a single package on top of each other (rice n peas at bottom- cabbage topped the rice and peas then the one big pc of jerk chicken topped it off- same goes for the oxtails in another one package container) was plentiful.
I drove back home 45 minutes away and was savoring the taste of my new spot I heard rave reviews on.
Food- oxtails NO flavor! Tender yet No salt pepper nothing! Jerk chicken was not jerk chicken more like country fried chicken with a little pinch of Spice and bland! Cabbage soggy! Rice n peas soggy! No flavor! Mac n cheese ticked me off the most bc I only treat myself to It literally once a month-no freaking flavor!!!! Just boiled noodles with a pinch of cheese.
I’m think this place is a Soul Food place trying to serve Caribbean dishes that are NOT Caribbean dishes. Maybe it’s bc I’m use to REAL Caribbean dishes being as it may. I should have know when I saw food that was prepared buffet style Not covered I should have left. But, I wanted to support blk own business.
What ever happened to the Pride of preparing food and keeping up a business? Honestly this is the 4th blk own business (food) I’ve visited in bmore and I have not been happy with the taste/preparation of the food. I won’t eat in bmore again. This place just put the...
Read moreThis is an take-out location. It could use a renovation to be more astheticly pleasing because it is a bit antiquated. Okay, enough about the looks.... Now food! I walked in and was pleasantly happy at the inordinate amount of options of food. I asked for pholourie and a doubles one time... Unfortunately they only had roti 😞. So I ordered a Goat Roti with pepper. I had to wait 10min, which makes me think the roti skin is freshly made. Let me tell you why... The roti skin was soft, flakey, the split peas was perfectly cooked and o gosh tasty like that! Doh talk for the curry goat...eh eh... Melting off de bone, tasty, and perfect texture! Only down sides are: #1. is its $21, must roti shops sell for $13 in MD. #2. the roti isn't big enough to wrap. #3. The container, a three compartment holder, does not allow for a full roti. #4. The lady who put the food together did not have a mask on.... SO THEY SERVE/COOK/PREP FOOD WITHOUT A MASK🤔😔😬.... I WAS STARVING SO I STILL OREDERD AND ATE...🙏🏽 #5. I took away a 🌟 because I shared my goat roti with a carribean born and raised person, they took one bite and was like, no thanks. I ATE IT...
Read moreThis place is FANTASTIC! The food is wonderfully flavorful and delicious. Jerk chicken was incredible (get some of the gravy and hot sauce on the side) and the Mac and cheese was so good. Shoutout to one of the regulars who helped me get the lay of the land and let me know about all the good work the owner Mike did giving out free food to the needy during the pandemic. He said the portions used to be huge, but as you can see from my photo they’re still very generous (and only cost me $10)!! Service was straightforward and the prices weren’t bad. It is take out only, so plan to go home or walk over to Lexington market to eat. Some items aren’t available everyday so if you have your eye on something specific (pumpkin roti) better to call ahead. Can’t wait...
