We checked reviews for a spot to have lunch on one of our visits to Baltimore. We found the numerous 4-Star + reviews for Taco Town and headed off with every intention of enjoying some wonderful tacos. We found Taco Town without problem (the big red, white and green awning helped) and wandered inside, we were already hungry and our mouths were watering. There were only a few folks in front of us which was fine because that gave us a moment to examine the extensive menu including the days specials which were neatly handwritten on bright orange poster board. It was then that hunger overtook the taco mission and redirected it to the specials. So, besides tacos, Taco Town also has burritos, enchiladas, and taquitos. What's great about Taco Town's cafeteria style service is that you get to see your imagination come to life in the form of what looks really good and taste even better! My burrito for instance, started with the flour tortilla which was one of the largest I'd ever seen! Selecting from the offerings of white or Mexican rice, pinto or black beans is the mere beginning of this adventure. I selected mahi-mahi as my protein which instead of being taken out of the fridge precooked to be warmed up was a marinated fillet of mahi that went on to the flat top and cooked right then and there. Freshness is one thing that Taco Town is obviously all about. From there I truly vast selection of toppings and fillings dazzle the eye and get the stomach juices churning. Besides what everybody thinks of as standard taco fillings, there are some unique and tasty items on the selection. These include corn, shredded cabbage, cactus, mushrooms, and grilled pineapple. Each topping that I selected was loaded on with a generous portion. Then, the mahi-mahi was added and a nice drizzle of chipotle mayo sauce on top. At this point, most places where you get this type of burrito would be wrapped in foil. However, after very carefully folding and rolling the tortilla, Taco Town used the traditional method of placing the burrito seam side down on the flat top to seal all that goodness inside. This thing is a monster and delicious. The freshness and the flavors of all of the fillings came through and the marinated mahi was outstanding. I'm glad I opted for a good spritz of fresh lime juice and salsa verde amongst my fillings/toppings because these added just the right amount of tartness and zing to the party. My companion, a California by birth who grew up enjoying all the great food that San Diego has to offer says: "These barbacoa enchiladas are some of the best Mexican food I have ever had!" Trust me, she does not say this all the time. The large oval plate was chock full of food including rice and beans and a shredded lettuce with guac, salsa and sour cream. Three good size enchiladas were centered on the plate. The barbacoa was deliciously melt-in-your-mouth tender with a flavor that was slightly smoky slightly sweet flavor and outrageously good. The word unicsios...
Read moreI just realized that I posted a review two years ago. However, I just wrote a long one for Yelp, so I will update this review also!
This is the best place ever!! This is the best and most authentic Mexican food place that I have found in Bmore (says myself who grew up in SoCal and with a Mexican mom and grandma who could cook)!
This place is pricey, but the food is completely worth it. It can easily last two meals!
I feel like Baltimore City mostly has Latin restaurants that has a mix of Latin ethnic foods, but Taco Town is straight up Mexican. Whenever the ills of Bmore make me miss SoCal, I'll just come here for lunch! They don't close early like some restaurants downtown, so I can easily stop by after work or between jobs!
Also, I appreciate that they never assumed I spoke Spanish, despite that many people do so by looking at me.
Additionally, they nearly always have horchata, Jamaica, tamarindo, etc. Those drinks make my day also (and which I've gotten my coworkers to love)!
I am extra impressed today, because one of the staff members chased me to the corner to ensure I received my extra tortilla I had ordered.
This place and these people are awesome and I am so thankful that they were able to keep afloat during the worst of the pandemic!!
Two years before....
Super authentic!! Burritos are awesome!!!! May be a bit cheaper than other Latin American food places nearby. ...
Read moreI got an Al pastor burrito, and it was hands-down the worst burrito I’ve ever had. There is absolutely no way that that pork was cooked Al pastor. My fiancé ordered beef quesabirria and it was obviously not cooked birria because the meat was bland and the cook had to use sauce from an uncovered, unlabeled metal tin sitting on the cooktop. That was also the blandest, most tasteless birria either of us have had. Most of the meat in his quesadillas Was very fatty and chewy, too, so he paid for the premium meat and didn’t get to eat most of it. I thought the bad visit was exclusive to only us, because every other person who ate there that weekend absolutely loved it & raves about it, which is the only reason why we went. I thought that I was just spoiled by better Spanish food because I am Spanish and I live in an area that’s heavily populated by Spanish people. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that, this place actually served me the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had in my life. It was expensive and a huge waste of money. Two weeks after getting home from my vacation, I’m notified that this place was shut down due to health hazards. I don’t know if they’ve reopened yet but I know I will never go back regardless of how late or hungry I am in Baltimore. The food was terrible and the establishment was dirty. The service was very fast and the people were...
