My wife and I were really excited to try this place and when I say excited I mean excited! But we left disappointed đđ unfortunately. So first I really dislike where its located, second I really dislike the building its located in...moving on, we ordered the jerk oxtail tacos for a appetizer with coco bread and the tacos were just okay, the oxtail flavor was good but the taco as a whole was underwhelming....so next would be the main entre, I knew exactly what I wanted and couldn't wait to get it, and if you guessed the curry goat then you guessed right! So to my surprise they were out of đ đĄ which was really disappointing because, we got there maybe at 530pm, they opened at 5pm so there is no way you should be out of goat in my opinion. Saturday night 530pm you should have goat!!!!! I was really disappointed by that, ok so my wife ordered the rasta pasta with oxtail and i ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas and i also got the ja mac and cheese. The food wasn't nasty, let me start off by saying that, however it didn't meet our expectations either....the jerk chicken wasn't already chopped, it should have been chopped up. The rice and peas were again just okay, i love me some rice and peas but these were just not what I was expecting, they tried to elevate the rice and peas, I get it but no don't elevate my rice and peas...I don't want fancy rice and peas I want good ol authentic jamaican rice and peas but again it wasn't nasty, none of the food was....the ja mac and cheese was also just okay......if I'm paying 135 dollars for food, I want to leave there feeling like I got my money's worth not like I just gave away money and that's how I felt leaving this place and I desperately wanted to feel like this place was amazing but its not and sadly to say I will not be going back at least not to this location, maybe the one in college park is better or the next time I go home to Detroit, I'll try the...
Read moreAfter a long 12-hour flight, I found myself drawn to Jerk at Night the wifeâs recommendations. A beautifully designed establishment that has been buzzing on Instagram. As someone who critiques restaurants rather than seeking them out, I approached my visit with an open mind and a hunger for authenticity.
Ambience: The atmosphere is vibrant and distinctly Caribbean, making you feel like youâve stepped right into the heart of Jamaica. Itâs a delightful setting to unwind after a long day.
Service: The service was commendable. Our server, Kiki, was phenomenalâattentive but not overbearing, ensuring everything was timely and smooth.
Food Quality: Now, letâs talk about the food. Iâd rate the beef patties around 7 out of 10. They were enjoyable, but letâs be honest, beef patties can be a bit standard across the board. The dipping sauce was a nice touch. The jerk chicken taco was decent; however, being a cook myself, I found the chicken slightly dryâthough not excessively so. The flavors were good, earning a solid 7 out of 10.
The cocoa bread felt like regular bread to me, but perhaps thatâs due to my taste buds being overwhelmed by all the flavors we were trying. For my main course, I opted for salmon, rice and peas, and cabbage. Unfortunately, the cabbage was a bit hard and lacked flavor, while the rice was undercooked and not as vibrant as one would expect from a Caribbean restaurant. My wife had the oxtail, which was tender and flavorful, but it couldnât quite redeem the rice and cabbage.
Overall, Iâd give Jerk at Night a 6.5 out of 10. I genuinely support Black-owned establishments and encourage others to check them out. Perhaps my experience was unique, so give it a try and see...
Read moreI really want this place to succeed, since the theater district has been without a table-service restaurant since Forno closed about a year ago. On the night of December 7th we were seated in a nearly empty freezing cold dining room. A torpedo heater was roaring away on the floor under my feet, but it struggled to keep the dining room in the low 50's. Everyone was bundled up in their heavy coats and the torpedo heater filled the dining room with the cloying smell of kerosene vapor; a full third of their entrees were unavailable, and there was no bar, wine, or beer (not even Red Stripe) available. We passed on the offered rum punch and Prosecco. The dining room is beautifully decorated with street art murals and vintage vinyl adorning the walls.
The jerk chicken was superb, with the finest flavor profile of any jerk I've tasted - combining sweet, smokey, savory, and spicy notes in perfect proportions and served in a pewter brazier. The salmon was also a standout, and the mac and cheese was sublime.
On the downside, we were seated at 6 PM, ordered immediately and were served a hour and 20 minutes later; the long wait for the food nearly made us miss the 8 PM curtain at the Hippodrome across the street.
The prices were also a little surprising, with the bill for two entrees, one side, no apps or drinks coming to over $100 with tip.
With time, I hope Jerk at Nite becomes an enduring addition to Baltimore's struggling theater district. The city has a role to play here as well, as an increased police presence would allow the owner to do without the private security...
