Over the past weekend, we had this incredible guest visiting from London, an internationally renowned violinist who had just performed at the Schnitzer Hall. After her concert, she was in the mood for some samgyupsal, so I did some digging and decided to check out JCD, a new Korean BBQ spot in Beaverton.
My first impressions: impressively spotless for a bbq, modern design, and well managed. It’s got a chill vibe with a little bar in the corner for those who like their BBQ with a side of cocktails. And the service… it was AMAZING!
We ordered a set that included samgyupsal, brisket, and marinated pork, plus sides of gamjatang and soondae. The food was fantastic! Banchans were flavorful and kept coming nonstop.
We did run into a minor issue with one cut of meat being a little too fatty, so we respectfully asked the server if it could be replaced. The owner personally came out to address this issue. Not only did he replace it without hesitation but brought out a huge portion of marinated meat that was way more than we expected. Talk about customer service! He was so friendly and continued to check in with us making us feel like we were the only customers in the restaurant. But what I noticed was that he treated every table with the same level of care and attention that he showed us.
Oh, and here’s the kicker! The owner can now say that he had a KIA sponsored mega superstar violinist dining at his restaurant! Yes, Clara Jumi Kang herself was at our table and gave a huge thumbs up. She’s super humble and didn’t want to make a fuss, but honestly, that just adds to how great the night was.
In my opinion, JCD is a total gem. Tasty Korean-American food, stellar service, and reasonable prices makes this place one of the best Korean BBQ spots in the area. 10/10,...
Read moreJCD Pocha is a great spot to go with friends and family though keep in mind, this spot can't host large parties and is very cramped. Expect to wait up to 35 minutes for your food to arrive because it can get really busy on weekends. The staff are very nice and they do their best to accomodate customers. One thing to note is that there is no ventillation in the restaurant so expect for a mix of perfume and kimchi in the air.
The main reason I gave JCD Pocha a poor rating is because the quality of the food is sub-par and their dishes are not very authentic.
One particular dish I tried to enjoy was the Japchae (잡채). Normally, the Japchae dish consists of sweet potato starch noodles stir fried with vegetables and meat. The one that I ordered did not use filet mignon (or pork shoulder) and was of a very poor quality. The meat was chewy and tough. It also lacked the shitake flavor that the beef is normally marinated with. Lastly, there were no vegetables in the dish other than cabbage (and way too much black peppercorn). The entire dish was so oily, I actually became a little sick after eating it. If you take a look at the website you'll see an image of the dish I'm speaking of as a false advertisement (the image shows the traditional Japchae dish).
Great Japchae should consist of clove, sesame seeds, sesame oil, spinach, mushrooms, carrot, and bell pepper (all cooked separately). At least that is what I have known it to consist of in my experience. I frequent Korean restaurants and usually order the same dish so I would like to think that I have a good reference point when it comes to cultural cuisine.
My family won't be coming back to eat here again but I do hope that the restaurant will do their best to enhance the flavors of their dishes...
Read moreWent for a family meal, the side dishes are good. The staff are really nice, the portion are decent. Some of the main dish are hit & miss, here are some misses imo: the ramen r just instant ramen with sea food (a bit expensive for instant noodles), the coconut shrimp seem like it is from Costco, the frieds are fine a bit basic. The fried chicken was not bad (not juicy though) the kimchi cabbage soup was great, k-pancake is also not bad if you haven't tried it. Unfortunately one of our bowls were dirty, the food took really long to came out & it came out one by one.
During a family meal, we found that the side dishes were quite good. Additionally, the staff was incredibly pleasant and accommodating, and the portion sizes were decent.
However, some of the main dishes were a bit hit or miss. For example, in our opinion, the ramen seemed like nothing more than instant noodles with seafood, and the coconut shrimp appeared to be store-bought from Costco. Although the fried dishes were acceptable, they were rather basic. On a positive note, the fried chicken was not terrible, although it was not particularly juicy, and the kimchi cabbage soup was excellent. Furthermore, if you have yet to try it, the k-pancake is worth a shot.
Unfortunately, one of our bowls was dirty, and it took an extended period for the food to arrive. When it did finally come out, it was served one...
