I had high hopes but was left disappointed. So, the high points- they have a very creative menu including being one of only two restaurants I know in the US that serves Peshawari naan. The lamb vindaloo was good quality lamb and the spices were done competently with just the heat I asked for. It goes south from there. I had the bhindi masala and I have only once had worse quality okra in 60 years. It was fibrous and stringy to the extent that- I was really hungry for it and did my damnedness to eat it- it was like constantly having to remove dental floss from my teeth. NASTY! It's very seldom I can't eat something to try it and with that might as well have flushed the cash down the commode. This was January which is not exactly okra season, but there's good frozen okra and only the cheapest of the cheap are of that quality. I know my okra and that was CHEAP okra. The crown jewel, the Peshawari naan that I have been searching for for 35 years- was a freakin' tortilla it was so flat and my wife actually had to use a magnifying glass to see the filling. Price? They have dishes on the menus for $12 that I can make for 25 cents. A two dollar pappadum? Mine run me five cents. And with all that profit margin, I get the crappiest okra I've ever had in my life? I don't think so. This is a mover-and-shaker kind of area. Lots of self-important stuffed shirts that think they know everything about everything. They've obviously been writing restaurant reviews, judging by what I'm seeing here. So, it's take the money and run. Point being, I'm not even complaining to them. This is par for the course around here. Another over-hyped, potentially great business, that has been gutted by a souless profit-seeker. You can tell the kitchen brains behind this operation is top notch. But a souless marketer has perverted that for some banal, minor profit that will ultimately cost more than it makes. If I were the owner, I'd terminate the business manager with...
Read moreBeing a Bedford resident, a new Indian restaurant in town was always something to look forward to. One that had a 4 plus rating was a must try. Finally, almost two months after the place opened, my wife and I went there for lunch. And what a disappointment it turned out to be.
The place itself is fairly basic. We were the only customers when we walked in. Since we were not very hungry we decided to order the mixed non veg platter for starters and biryani for the main course.
The mixed non-veg platter was a con job. There was no mixed non-veg in the platter. More than half the plate was batter fried onions. The other significant component was batter fried paneer (cottage cheese). The whole thing was topped with four or five small pieces of chicken, some fried and some tandoori. And finally two big samosas. It would have been still ok if the items were even passably palatable, but no.
The biryani was worse. It was just some dry pieces of bland chicken mixed with even drier and blander rice, topped with raw onion. The whole thing tasted like lukewarm tap water.
The food was so disappointing that there's no point in commenting on the price. Even a single dollar would be too much to pay for it. That brings me to the next question. How did this abomination of a place get such a high rating? There are a couple of possibilities. One, the Google rating is doctored. All the 20 odd reviewers are owners/family/friends. Two, the chef/cook didn't turn up and they got someone who has never tasted Indian food let alone cook it even once in their life, to do the cooking.
If I could have broken down my rating, this is what it would look like. Food, 0. Ambience, 2. Price, 2. Service, 5. The waitress was an inexperienced but really nice girl who was trying her best....
Read moreI found Desi Chulha through google suggestions and was pleasantly surprised. I love Indian cuisine. We have been using another establish in the HEB area of DFW metroplex and have tried others as well but none have really stood out until last night. I use Grub Hub occasionally and was on there last night trying to figure out dinner while running a couple errands. The reviews online for Desi are good so I have it a shot. I placed my pickup order through Grub Hub app. I was already out and about so figured I would go pick up the order instead of paying for delivery and service fees. Desi has an extensive menu with lots of great offerings; any traditional Indian dish you can think of, they specialize in. The portions from what I can tell are generous and well prepared. Everything tasted great. The lads who run the establishment are very personable and cheery. Desi is a newer eatery on the HEB area however seem to fit right in and bring their A game. Two people ate for $45 and even then it could have been less had I not ordered for favorite dessert and extra sauce that I love :P. Their prices are very reasonable and portion sizes are adequate. We have leftovers to eat on for a couple of days. They are also on Grub Hub and DoorDash. I’m not sure of other food runner services however the restaurant themselves also offer delivery. The establishment was simple and clean. We were satisfied with the outcome and will...
