We have been loyal clients at South Beverly for quite some time. Living nearby, it has always been our preferred dining spot, and we’ve consistently appreciated the excellent quality of food. However, an incident a few weeks ago left us deeply disappointed and frankly shocked by the treatment we received.
Due to an honest mistake, we had accidentally made two reservations—one for 7:15 PM and another for 7:45 PM. We arrived around 7:35 PM and checked in with the hostess, who acknowledged our arrival and said she would let us know when the table was ready. After waiting for about 20 minutes, we followed up and were told, “you are next.” However, 15 minutes later, at 8:05 PM, we noticed guests who had arrived after us being seated ahead of us.
When we inquired again, we were told we were late and, therefore, had to wait. I politely clarified that we had a reservation for 7:45 PM, which we checked in for on time, and I showed the hostess my confirmation on my phone. She also found it in the system. Her response was that since we made two reservations, we had to wait longer. This explanation made no sense.
A second hostess reiterated the same reasoning when we asked again. When we questioned her about her earlier promise that we were “next,” she again blamed the dual reservation and claimed we were late. Despite explaining ourselves clearly, we were met with rigid, dismissive behavior.
Eventually, the manager came over, and instead of trying to resolve the situation, she simply repeated the same vague explanation. There was no accountability, no attempt to de-escalate or offer a solution. We were ultimately placed on a waiting list without a clear time estimate.
What kind of customer service is this? Were we being punished for an innocent mistake of booking two reservations? Isn’t a manager’s role to resolve issues, not exacerbate them? Her tone and demeanor were unprofessional and dismissive—completely unacceptable.
We would have appreciated transparency. If our reservation had been canceled, we should’ve been told that right away so we could make other plans, especially since we were with an elderly guest who was left standing the entire time. This was a special occasion for us, and it was entirely ruined by poor management and a lack of basic courtesy.
We eventually lost patience and left.
Moreover, we were shocked to learn that the wait time for walk-ins was over 2.5 hours. That is simply absurd—this is not a courthouse or a nightclub. It felt as though we should feel grateful just to be allowed to dine there. That’s not how hospitality works.
The food at South Beverly is undeniably good, but the management and customer service desperately need improvement. We will be taking our business elsewhere and will not be returning after such an unpleasant and...
Read moreSame owners as Honor Bar and Hillstone. I have been to Honor Bar many times over the years, but some reason I never tried SBG. I got my chance this past weekend and I’m very happy that I did. It’s very similar to Honor Bar and Hillstone in that they specialize in traditional American food, the lighting is dark and moody, and each has a large bar with tons of seating. The menus of all 3 are very similar and have many dishes unique to each location, even though there are some dishes on all 3 menus like the Ruby Red Trout. As you would guess by the name SBG is located in southern Beverly Hills. Parking in this area is much easier than it is north of Wilshire. They’re not as many parking garages in this area however street parking is very easy to find in this part of town. We found a metered parking spot one block away for our Saturday 7 PM dinner. Our server was polite however there were some issues checking in and getting seated. We arrived at 6:50 for a 7 PM reservation and did not sit down at our table until 7:15. They were also about 30 people waiting in the entryway so it was extremely crowded and we were all bumping into each other while we waited for a table to be ready. For walk-ins walking it was a two hour wait. I would suggest making reservations here because it’s very popular and they’re already pushed to the max as is. The other issue we had was we found a green worm in the Aritchoke so we only ate 2 of them given the surprise visitor.
The menu has a lot of great options on it and is very similar to Honor Bar. Pricing is a bit more expensive compared to other places that serve the same type of food. We started off with the Deviled Eggs which I have had before and am a big fan of - the diced pickles inside really added to the flavor. Next I tried the Grilled Artichokes and honestly loved them. They come in a set of three so it’s a good size portion. The aioli with it was absolutely delicious and I ate every bit of it. Finally for my entree I chose the True Dover Sole because I’m a huge fan of that fish and this one was done very well. It was lightly breaded and I prefer sautéed but still I really enjoyed it. I was underwhelmed with the side of coleslaw though. Wish they would do a gem salad or rice mix or something along the lines. Maybe just do your brussels sprouts instead because the coleslaw was pretty bland.
Overall a great place to have a nice casual meal. I would say that SBG is more suited for dinner with friends or family versus a date spot but in fairness this place would be good for pretty much...
Read moreYou can really tell when a place is great by how they handle certain issues that come up. You can't blame a business for being so busy that their reservations are behind. That is a high class problem. That being said I had made a reservation for my son's 21st birthday And upon getting there there was about a half hour wait past my reservation. I asked very kindly to speak to a manager and a wonderful person named Kate came to the rescue beyond being pleasant and compassionate. She was determined to fix the situation which she did in multitude. She got us sat pretty much immediately from stepping on the scene offered us a free round of drinks and kept checking up on the table to make sure everything was OK. Our waitress, Nariah had the most fantastic energy was so kind, and when unfortunately, the kitchen messed up and didn't bring our Caesar salads first, though they did bring the extra dressing on the side, which sat there, and the Caesars came with our meal instead, Nariah could see that we weren't thrilled and immediately took to rectifying the situation. She brought our entrées back to the kitchen, made sure they were re-cooked while we ate our Caesar and the moment we were done with our Cesar our entrées arrived brand new, hot, and so darn good those baby back ribs are unbelievable by the way they truly do melt off the bone. Nariah, in a move that was beyond cool and obviously signed off on by Kate, came back to inform us that the entire dinner was taken care of we had to pay nothing. We were beside ourselves. We thought the free drinks were kind that Kate offered. Needless to say we left our waitress sizable gratuity, which would've happened either way and took our exit. We were a quarter of a way down the block when we hear a voice calling my name. We turned to find Kate who had jogged after us to give my son a gift certificate for his 21st birthday of $50 to come back and join them for a meal or drinks anytime he chose. This is the kind of customer service that rarely exists nowadays and it makes me thrilled to see that in some places it still does (and by some places, I mean, South Beverly Grill). What a fantastic experience for my son's 21st. It was truly made memorable and they now have two customers for life. PS I can see why it's always so busy. I'll say it one more time. The food is scrumptious run do not walk to this place so good such nice staff. I can't recommend it highly enough. I wish I could...
