Generally speaking, most of our food was "good" and the pricing was within decency, so we would probably come back next time we are in the area.
A few things though that we felt the need to mention:
The online menu/prices seemed cheaper than the prices once we got into the restaurant. Minor complaint - obviously things change and prices go up, but the online menu should probably be updated.
We specifically asked for our order of onion rings to be "extra crunchy." We even joked with the employee at the register, asking if if they could "be made extra brown or kept in the fryer just a bit longer"- he joked back with us and said "of course".
When we got them, they were anything but. It almost felt like we were punk'd. They were actually under cooked, soft and extremely greasy/oily! And at around $4 for this, we felt ripped off - especially after emphasizing in several different ways we would like them extra crunchy/brown.
** One other thing which I don't know how to put words on - by the register, they had an awesome display of about 10-12 food plates. At first, we thought they were props - they weren't. These were actual plates of food that were made, probably $150 worth of stuff if somebody were to come in and purchase everything they saw. I jokingly asked the guy at the register - "what do you do with all of this stuff every night?" He replied "we throw it out.". We joked back and forth about 'half pricing it' after a certain time period or giving it away at closing perhaps, but he just re-iterated that the stuff was "thrown out." Um. ok.
Now if they do this each and EVERY day, they are really just wasting both a ton of food and money for no real reason, not to mention wasting their cooks time. Their restaurant, their rules - but think about it. Even if this is all prepared before the place opens, their cooks have to spend time making/preparing all of this when they could be doing any plethora of other things. Sorry, I can't fathom simply preparing plates of quality food every day for DISPLAY PURPOSES... only to throw it in the trash at the end of each night.
Will we come back - yes probably. The service overall was decent and we will probably want to try some other food items. At one time (late 80s, 90s), this place - across the street on Army Trail Road at that time - was an incredible (and much larger) restaurant - so it is also a nostalgia thing for us. They used to serve ice cream in little plastic sports helmets, have a jukebox, and sports helmets/equipment/memorabilia throughout the restaurant.. Ahh the...
Read moreI tried the chicken fingers here twice. First time I ordered through Uber Eats, and the chicken was greasy and soggy. I thought maybe it was just that it was just sitting too long before the Uber driver picked it up, so I tried again a few weeks later in-person because of the reviews that speak so highly of them.
Same experience again, the chicken fingers are literally glistening, coated in oil. The batter absorbed a lot of the oil, and as I bit into it, it was wringing the oil into my mouth. This wasn't because it was juicy chicken, it was straight up fryer oil soaked into the batter. You can see the pics I added that shows the soggy, oil-soaked breading. The sweet potato fries were also equally soggy, with absolutely no crispiness. Although the seasoning and flavor of the food was great, My wife and I just couldn't finish eating our food because of the heaviness of the oil and the texture.
This really is a symptom of fryer oil that is too low of a temperature, which means the food absorbs oil. So maybe I just came on off days that someone wasn't maintaining their oil temps properly since other reviews claim theirs were crisp.
The grilled cheese sandwich was pretty freaking good though, which is not something I typically expect for a kids item. The regular fries are also pretty good. But these two things aren't something that would...
Read moreI stopped by Sporty's Restaurant and catering in Bloomingdale for lunch. I went at 1 PM thinking that I would avoid the lunch rush. I was dead wrong because the place was slammed at 1 PM. I went with the Italian beef with sweet peppers and an order of fries. Great fresh cut fries and an XL size portion. Italian beef was very good. Beef was seasoned well and very juicy. The Turano roll did a great job of holding this juicy beef and all the meat. A thumbs up for their Italian beef. It was a torrential downpour outside so I decided to order more food and feed my fat face. I went to the counter and ordered a Polish. They asked me if I wanted it on French bread or hotdog bun. I went with the hotdog bun. When I received the Polish I realized that it was a mistake going with the hotdog bun. Their Polish is huge and then you add all of those grilled onions and that poor little hotdog bun didn't stand a chance. It was quite messy. Overall the Polish had a good flavor, but the texture was horrible. The Polish was tough and rubbery, not very appealing. I give their Polish a...
