The High Country of NC holds a special place in our lives because my wife and I spent our honeymoon in Beech Mountain. So, for our 26th wedding anniversary, we decided to celebrate in Blowing Rock. When looking at dining options for our anniversary dinner, I wanted something within walking distance of our motel. I selected several dining options for my wife to choose from, and after reviewing the respective menus, she chose The Speckled Trout, and what a great choice it was for our special evening! We arrived early for our reservation, and within 10 minutes we were seated. Although it was a very pleasant evening in Blowing Rock, we chose to dine inside. We were blessed (I mean it!) to be seated in Keeli’s section. She cheerfully greeted us and took our drink order. Looking over the menu while waiting for our drinks to arrive, surmising that a restaurant that has “Trout” in its name must be known for its trout, both my wife and I decided to order the Carolina Mt. Trout; my wife ordered hers blackened and I ordered mine hickory smoked. We both ordered our trout with two sides; my wife ordered the fennel & potato salad and collard greens, and I ordered the collard greens and smoked gouda grits simply because I am Southern, and the grits were produced in my home state of South Carolina. When our entrees arrived, our trout was perfectly seasoned and prepared. My wife enjoyed her potato salad, and my grits did South Carolina proud! And while our collard greens were delicious, a word of caution – they are seasoned with hot pepper vinegar (my late father NEVER ate collards without it), so don’t let that first mouthful take your breath away! Although we don’t normally order dessert when dining out, when Keeli asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, I mentioned to her that since it was our anniversary, absolutely! Keeli congratulated us on our anniversary, and she THANKED us for choosing The Speckled Trout for our special evening! Pleasantly full, but wanting to treat ourselves on our anniversary, my wife and I decided to split cheesecake with blueberry compote. When Keeli delivered the cheesecake, it tasted as good as its presentation. I will also say that chain restaurant that has “Cheesecake” in its name could take a lesson from The Speckled Trout. Not only was the cheesecake better tasting than that other restaurant, but it was also a fraction of the cost! Not that cost mattered on our anniversary, but I say this only because I took notice of the difference. When the bill arrived, Keeli had, sweetly, comped the cheesecake because it was our anniversary. Her kind gesture was totally unexpected, but greatly appreciated by my wife and I, and only confirmed that we had made the right choice as to where to dine on our anniversary. Although I don’t know the name of our chef at The Speckled Trout on the evening of September 5th, I DO know the name of our server, and thanks to Keeli (and the chef), my wife and I had a dining experience that perfectly celebrated 26 years of marriage. Great food AND great memories!

We stopped at the restaurant for lunch and were probably seated outside. There are covered and non-covered areas, as well as indoor seating. The waiter was very attentive and kind. He took our appetizer order. We got a salad to split between the two of us and devilish eggs. I was really pleased that they were willing to serve the salad separately. When we ordered the main dish, we were able to split it as well. Devilish eggs were not that great. The egg white was clearly old, so I assume they pre-boil the eggs a day or two in advance. It tasted rubbery, and the topping was nothing to brag about either. Definitely a failing grade for this dish. The salad was basic, and balsamic vinaigrette was more like a paste instead of dressing. The consistency was definitely odd. I wonder if it was made with some sort of coconut oil that might harden and cooler temperatures. We also ordered almond and cornmeal crusted trout. It was excellent. Served with cheesy grits (they have a variety of other sides if you don't like grits), trout was soft and flaky. It looked like it was cooked fresh. Overall, not a bad experience. I would rate it at 3.5 out of 5. I was a bit taken aback by the reaction at the hostess desk when I mentioned that I was concerned about a dog who was locked up in the car in their parking lot on this hot day. They reassured me that the dog is okay, so I assumed it was one of the employee's pets. With that said, the reaction was almost defensive as I was trying to bring their attention to a safety issue. It certainly darkened the overall experience, albeit not relevant to the restaurant itself.

The Speckled Trout came highly recommended and we were starving when we arrived so we were really looking forward to our meal. We started off with the BLT Salad. We were a party of 3 and they knew we were sharing so they brought us each a salad plate and an individual serving of dressing which was nice. The salad was just okay but the portion was large and good for sharing as a starter. We also got the hoecakes which were cute and tasty. For entrees, one sister had the pork skewers and another had the almond and cornmeal encrusted trout, and both were lacking salt/seasoning and also just okay. I had the Wagyu burger which sounded amazing but was a huge disappointment. I ordered it medium rare and although the center was pinkish, it was very dry and lacking any real flavor. There was also hardly any goat cheese and the bread was slightly stale (you can see in the photos). I took about three bites before I gave up and decided it wasn’t worth it. When the server came around, I told him about my dissatisfaction with the burger and he just said “sorry about that” and handed me the check. No offer to recook the burger, replace it with something else, nothing. My sister asked if he could remove the burger from our bill since it wasn’t good and I had hardly eaten it and he left to check with his manager. He came back and offered me 20% off the price of the burger, so essentially $3 off a $100+ bill. The three of us left feeling very perplexed as to how this place is so popular. Wouldn’t return and definitely wouldn’t say it’s worth the 45 minute wait.

I really wanted to like this place. The other reviews were great so I expected a similar experience. We made reservations for a late dinner and sat on the patio. We were sitting there for about 10 minutes before a waitress came to our table for a drink order. When she did, we told her we didn’t want to use the water glass on the table since there was a large hair under the upside down turned glass. She said ok and attempted to brush the hair off the table, which moved it an inch or so. I would have expected her to offer to wipe down the table with some sort of sanitizer. The trout deviled eggs were mediocre. The hot sauce was a nice touch but the amount of trout in each egg was insufficient and became hidden/hard to taste. We also ordered a cup of the chicken and dumplings. That was the best part of our meal. Very tasty. My wife and I both ordered trout for dinner. Presentation was good but overall lacked flavor on both dishes. The side of Main Street corn was outstanding. The collard greens were embarrassing to eat. Crunchy with little to no flavor. The Mac and cheese side was penne style noodles with a very runny sauce. No appearance of shredded cheese on top or anything other than a water downed sauce. It tasted okay but again was lacking overall flavor.

Wow! It's not often that this is the first word I post, but I wish there was an even better word! Chef Michael Foreman has brought a level of quality dining to Blowing Rock that is A+. They have been here for 4 years in this established location. Don't let the crowd steer you away, it is worth.the.wait! We put our name in for a table (40-50 min wait at 5:30 on a Monday) but opted for a comfortable seat at the bar. The conversation with the bartender, Zach, was friendly and informative. Great choice for us! Then to top the night off a friendly woman came to clear our place and asked how we enjoyed our meal. I figured she was the manager...she is one of the owners!!! Thank you Erica. It was a pleasure to meet you. We've found a new favorite in Blowing Rock. The name may refer to seafood only, but don't let that fool you--the steak was perfection. Parking is tight, but worth circling the block to find. Put your name in and they'll text you when your table is ready. We were able to stroll down the street which is gorgeous in the summer. Ok, I'm blubbering now. And we haven't had dessert yet! Triple chocolate cake with caramel sauce and fresh whipped cream. 5 stars alone! Fresh, moist and delicious. Large enough to share and still had some to take home.

A friend suggested this restaurant and we are so happy she did! Happy adults and kids after we left. I do recommend making a reservation - very popular especially on weekend (for good reason). I called earlier to see if they had a kids menu. Whoever answered the phone was engaging and very descriptive! I appreciated their customer service. Waiting available inside and out. Cool ambiance all around. I ordered a drink at the bar just as we were called. The bartender was great and told me he would bring it to my table. The Paloma was okay- probably would go for a beer next time. The server was kind, engaging to the kids and very helpful in navigating the menu with us based on our wants. Started with fries- A+ and great for sharing. I rarely get fish but I thought why not - I got the trout in the almond crust with the aioli on top. Wow!!! Highly recommend. My sides were the okra (okay - I wouldn't get this again. Something I felt I could make a little better at home) and Gouda grits (DO recommend- I had to keep my seven year old from polishing them off). Husband also loved his trout - and enjoyed his roasted beets. They have a good kid's paper menu and crayons to engage during the wait .
