The food here is chef’s kiss. My meal at Matlack’s was one of the best I’ve eaten at BoDo. I left a huge fan, already dreaming of going back asap!
I started with a glass of Candy Orange Sour by Untitled Art - a fruity sour that tasted of orange creamsicle. It was wonderfully tart but didn’t make me pucker, and incredibly refreshing. This would be excellent on a hot, summer day.
For food, I bellied up to a menu item I’d been eyeing for a while - Matlack’s Seattle Dog ($15.00). In fact, this was the offering that brought me into the restaurant. It’s an entire spicy kielbasa sausage nestled in a toasted hoagie roll, with layers of spiced cream cheese and topped with an abundance of caramelized onions. Hands down, this was very likely the best damn glizzy I’d ever had!!!It was so, so delicious! So perfectly grilled and assembled. An outstanding version of the famous dish. I know I’ll be fighting the urge to order this again next time I’m here…
Instead of the Frito’s, I asked for a side of Mac & Cheese, only an additional $4.50. Daaaamn, this was one heck of a dish. I swear there was more cheese (a beautiful blend of gruyere and cheddar) than pasta, which I am totally all for. It’s rich AF, so a side is the perfect size. Don’t skip this one.
My husband chose the Santa Maria Tri-Tip Sandwich - hickory and apple smoked tri-tip, sliced tomato, roasted poblano, chimichurri on an ACME baguette. From the few bites I was able to swipe, it was equally as delish as my order. The tri-tip was very flavorful and cooked perfectly. It paired well with Frito’s. I’d recommend this one as well.
The portions are large and certainly a bang for your buck. I appreciated the laid-back atmosphere and friendly service. I will...
Read moreWell, after a few visits to Boise and eating at so many good restaurants, that streak ended with a loud thud today at Matlack's. Just an absolutely awful service experience that dragged down fairly average dishes, making the whole experience regrettable. We sat down at noon and ordered pretty quickly. At 12:25 a server brought two dishes over - one was correct, the other was not. After some discussion in the back she came back and said the other server had rang it incorrectly, asked if we wanted the incorrect dish, and that the dish we originally ordered would be just a few more minutes. That was the last time any server stopped by our table. I used to work in the service industry - mistakes happen - just own it and apologize. The frito-pie we ordered had decent taste, but very little meat in it - noticeably bad actually. It had jalapenos in it though, and we ultimately had to go to the bar to get a water refill. After another 30 minutes my partner had to leave with her son. I finally flagged down a server and told her to cancel the rest of the order and bring my check. I let her know how poor of a service experience we had, and that the tickets times were ridiculous for lunch. She seemed pretty non-plussed and disinterested in what I had to say - she said "OK" and brought the check. Net: Way too long of ticket times for lunch; uninspiring food topped off with somewhat surly servers who apparently get embarrassed when they make a mistake and choose to just ignore a table. There are far too many great restaurants in Boise - I can't recommend Matlack's and certainly won't be...
Read moreBottom line, I came in for the nachos and was more than satisfied!
I'm in town for work and walked by this place about a week ago. It smelled amazing, so I stored it in my brain for a future excursion. I was really in the mood for nachos today and started looking up restaurants. When I came across Matlack's and saw the description on the menu, I decided to give it a shot. I'm traveling solo, so I sat at the counter and was waited on quickly. Wanted something light to drink but not a beer, and I went with a cider. They just changed over to a cranberry cider ($10 on the menu), and though it didn't go with my meal at all, it was very tasty. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, and I ordered the full nachos with tri-tip - $19 on the menu - they also have a half order. I waited for what send like a long time and was about to say something when the server brought out my nachos. Everything I was going for! Let me say right now, they are loaded! Get ready to 1) get messy or 2) get silverware and a plate ready (my advice, dig in and commit to the mess 😁). They were so damn good! Every bite had toppings. The chips were still crispy, not soft or soggy. The flavors were complimentary, complex, and delicious. 1,000% recommend the nachos, and I assume most of the menu is similar. Check it...
