First time visiting 224 Boston Street. Prices aside, I was extremely surprised. Let me explain.
As always with my reviews I am brutally honest, whethwr it is good or bad.
So, for years my wife has told me about 224 Boston Street, a place that she had frequently visited back in the 90s. She always raved about the food.
Well, this past weekend I finally decided to surprise her and take her on a date night. I reached out thru Opentable and was able to get a reservation at a prime time. When I told my wife about the reservation, I felt guilty because she was out with her best friend. I didn't want my wife to just have to abandon the great day she was having with her best friend. So, I called and the hostess was able to upgrade my reservation from 2 to 3 people. (Thank you to that hostess!, Sorry I never got your name)
And once again, I forgot to take pictures (sorry to my readers)
The entire dinner was amazing.
We started with with great bottle of Chianti.
The food started with the Mussels and also the Meatballs and Polenta. The meatballs were pretty good, (I am Sicilian so I'm very bios to my own) but, the Polenta... that was amazingly creamy and silky. The Mussels, though not one of my favorites (since I was a kid) but, I tried them again (for my wife) for the first time in about 40 years. Surprisingly for me, they were also delicious. (Again still not my favorites) they were buttery and cooked perfectly, not chewy or fishy. Again for me, I was surprised.
Dinner, I had the Shrimp Fra' Diavolo, special. The portion was the perfect size, 👌, there were 5 or 6 decent size shrimp cooked wonderfully, the pasta was also cooked perfectly. But the Fra Diavolo sauce... it was not over-poweringly hot but, just right... not too hot, but just the right amount of bite.
My wife, she had the Bone in Pork Chop with with the Brussels sprouts and the Scalloped Potatoes. They cooked her Chop just right, the Scalloped Potatoes, were creamy and delicious. (The Brussel Sprouts sorry I can't tell you because for me, those are a nope, not happening) my wife said they were awesome. So, if she says so. Trust me, take it for what she says...
Her Bestie had the Meatloaf with the creamy potatoe puree (I forget what her other side was, sorry) but, She said that her meatloaf was also wonderful. (I do have to say this, because, it was a pat on my back) she said it didn't come close to mine, but, was a close second. So, thats also a high praise from her.
I highly recommend taking her/him for a great intimate date night. Make sure you get your reservations in early because this place is only open a short time each day. And as we watched, it filled up fast.
As always don't take it for what I say. I encourage everyone to try each place for themselves. Always try something that you never have had, you maybe surprise yourself. But, always enjoy yourselves while doing it, whether good or bad. Always enjoy yourselves.
And always, always... be fair to your servers, remember you never know what's going on in someone's life that day. Whether good or bad. Take care of your servers...
Enjoy the day! Charles (aka, the fat guy in the...
Read moreIt was my 1st time attending a birthday brunch. I was excited to celebrate my cousin's birthday along with my sister and 10 other lovely ladies. After chatting for a long while, a waitress finally came to take our drinks order (and again once the last of us arrived). Significant time passed before the waitress returned to take our food order. Our drinks were empty by then. The complimentary water was room temperature and the dining area was hot. We asked for ice & for the ceiling fans to be turned on. My cousin set a timer so we would be aware of how much more time lapsed. One of us noticed that our waitress was seated at a curbside booth. The waitress was chatting with two of her friends. She had her feet up resting on the seat in front of her in full view of our party. We got the attention of another waitress who reluctantly proceeded to serve our party. Once the food arrived, 3 of the 12 ladies did not receive their plates. We asked for a manager who half heartedly tried to get a handle of the situation. The 1st waitress, the manager and the 2nd waitress weren't apologetic when inquiring about the missing orders. One of the ladies opted to cancel her order as to not wait an additional 30 to 40 minutes as the rest of us would have been finished eating by then. The food was good, except for the home fries. They were whole potatoes with skin on. It was charred & smashed open instead of smaller bite sized cuts we're accustomed to. My sister ordered French toast It consisted of 1 slice of bread cut into 2 triangular pieces with powdered sugar and strawberries on top, a very small portion. My cousin ordered a chicken sandwich, she shared the abundance of fries with the ladies who were still waiting for their food. The bill was nearly $400. We reviewed the bill and ensured that it was adjusted correctly.
Normally when I dine out with friends or family, waiters are much more attentive to their tables. I always tip according to the service. If at any time any minor error occurs the waiter and manager ensures that patrons are satisfied. I frequent Yard House in Dedham, The China in Quincy, Cesaria's in Dorchester, Gyu-Kaku in South Bay and Ali's Roti just to name a few... I have never experienced this before. I have worked in customer service nearly all my life, I know what it is like on both ends. Our party at 224 Boston remained cordial but we were certain that we won't return to this establishment. There are other factors which contributed to the bad experience, but it is not...
Read moreWe were in the area and looking for a place to eat... Found it via Google Maps and gave them a call. The lady on the phone said they can seat us right away if we can get there soon which we did. The place wasn't too packed for a Friday around 6:30. Decor was very old school, looking like it was from 100 years ago.
First off, the bread and butter was really good. Even knowing we had yummy food coming out, we couldn't resist.
We started off with the arancini. The pesto was a bit minty which was refreshing. A
Greek salad was a bit different...more like a regular salad with some ingredients from Greek salad mixed in. Not bad but wasn't what we expected. B
Bolognese was tasty but too salty. The pasta had good chew and the sauce was good... Had to eat it with something else to cut the saltiness. A-
We got the burger medium rare. It was definitely more of the rare side with a very pink middle...we could have sent it back to the kitchen but decided to give it a go. It was decent and fries were alright. Next time, we'll get the burger medium. B+
Savings the best for last - the short rib Mac and cheese was amazing. The short rib appeared to be braised and very tender. We thought the sauce consistency was a bit watery but it was just right when we tasted it. By far the best dish and this alone would bring us back. I had actually mixed some of that salty bolognese with this and it was decadent. A++
The wait staff all seem to help each other out so that helps with efficiency. The food came out super fast! Overall,...
