If you’re looking for a cozy and quaint oyster bar in the South End, you have to give B&G Oysters a try! It is the perfect spot for a date-night or special occasion. It is very cozy and intimate. I wouldn’t recommend it for large groups, given the limited space.
We decided to stop in to celebrate my mother’s birthday with some raw oysters. I would strongly recommend a reservation, especially given the limited seating and space. I am glad we made a reservation, as the place quickly filled up on a rainy/slushy Thursday evening.
B&G is located in Boston’s South End. The entrance is around the side of the business, right off their outdoor patio. I look forward to returning when we have better weather to truly enjoy the patio! It looked like the perfect place to enjoy oysters on a gorgeous day!
B&G is mainly known for their oysters and raw bar offerings. The raw bar is expansive and offers raw oysters, raw little-neck, and raw cherrystone clams.
They offer multiple raw oyster options to suit every taste and preference. We prefer a larger, creamier oyster. Our server was well-educated on the day’s offerings and explained the flavor profile of each variety offered, as well as the location where the oyster is procured.
The menu also offers fresh shrimp cocktail, crab cocktail, Jonah crab claws, and ceviche. If you are a fan of caviar, they offer three different types. For the larger appetite, they offer a “caviar flight”, as well as seafood towers with a solid variety.
If you’re not a raw-bar fan, no worries! They have a solid selection of appetizers. You’ll find fried calamari, fried oysters, tuna tataki, and more. They also have a small selection of fresh salads and of course, clam chowder.
The entree menu may be on the smaller side. However, everything here is incredible. They offer classics like Fish and Chips, Lobster Rolls, and Fried Clams. You’ll also see unique offerings, like Branzino.
We decided to start off with some raw bar offerings. We are huge fans of raw oysters, so we took the recommendations of our server. We went with a dozen oysters, half Wellfleet and half Martha’s Vineyard.
The oysters were exactly as described by our server. The oysters were medium to large size and they were some of the best I have had in the city. They were clean, no sand or bits to break a tooth on. Everything is shucked and prepared in an open kitchen.
Next, we decided to order a few of the shrimp cocktail and the crab cocktail. The shrimp were medium in size, cleaned properly, and incredibly fresh. No odd aftertaste. The crab cocktail was a generous portion, highly recommend it with a side of their toasted bread. It is plenty to share and is very rich.
For the main course, we decided to order the Whole Branzino. It is served with an incredible caramello sauce, charred lemon, and a crisp tomato/cucumber salad. The fish was cooked perfectly and our server was kind enough to assist in “de-boning” the Branzino.
The Branzino was super light and flavorful. The caramello sauce is truly incredible and is wonderful on the fish. The tomato/cucumber salad was juicy and crisp and complemented the fish perfectly. My only complaint is that we didn’t EACH order a fish. It is THAT good. The best I have had.
We will certainly be back. The Lobster Roll and Spicy Clam Linguine is on our list for the next visit! The service is top-notch and the servers are actually educated on the raw offerings of the day. That is a rare thing these days! Pours are also very generous.
We cannot wait to come back for more oysters and to enjoy a meal on their outdoor patio. It looks like the perfect spot to kick back with some fresh oysters on a beautiful day!
My only suggestion would be is to offer a larger dessert menu. That was the only thing that left a bit to be desired. Aside from that, one of our new...
Read moreBefore going to Boston, I had read in a website that this was one of the top places to go. I made it a point to make sure I ate here before I left.
Make sure you make a reservation via Opentable!! We made a reservation for 1:15 and within 15 min the place was absolutely packed. Now granted, they had outdoor seating but who wants to sit in the humid heat?!
I had not ordered clam chowder (my fav) yet in Boston. So I decided to order clam chowder. I was with my fiance and they were so nice they split the one order into two bowls for us. Overall this one of the top 2 clam chowders I've had. The other was in Seattle and I refuse to choose which is #1 because they are so different.
This clam chowder was liquidy BUT it had all sorts of different pieces of things inside (bacon, potatoe, etc). At the very top it had (what appeared to be the clam) covered in paprika. So when you mixed it in, it turned the liquid pink. It was absolutely delicious in every way. It was the perfect combination of flavors and texture.
We also decided to order 1 lobster roll. I had not yet eaten a lobster roll, but I was nervous about the mayo. I am NO FAN of mayo. HATE MAYO. So I was a bit anxious when they brought it out to us. And once again, their service is just fantastic! They brought out the lobster roll cut into 2 on two separate plates loaded with fries. They did not have to do that. They could have just cut it in half and given me an extra plate. That says a lot about their service!
Back to the lobster roll (sorry have a bit of ADD). It was just absolutely amazing. The texture, the taste... just perfect. Did not even taste a hint of mayo. As for the fries they were on the crispy side (not soggy) and were very tasty. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe they had some sort of green herb on them.
Last but not least, my fiance ordered oysters. He ordered 1 of each and absolutely loved every bit of it. They brought out a card indicating which oyster was which in clockwise order. And they were already "shucked" (as he put it). He absolutely loved them (I'm not an oyster person)
This place is every bit pricey but I would do it again in a heartbeat!!! Food was amazing and the service is absolutely...
Read moreI am not big into seafood, but my wife wanted to try a lobster roll while we are visiting Boston. After researching the best places for lobster rolls, we decided on B&G. Upon arriving, we were greeted at the host stand and asked if we had a reservation, so you may want to plan ahead and make a reservation. We didn't have one, but they sat us right away at the bar area where we enjoyed a view of the chefs preparing meals and oyster plates. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Not once did we ever need to ask for more water as it was quickly filled for us. The food came out very fast. We ordered the lobster roll, calamari, New England clam chowder and a sherry vinaigrette salad. Once again, I'm not a huge fan of seafood as I am very sensitive to fishy taste and do not like it, but when in Rome, got to do as the Romans. Anyways, I absolutely LOVED everything I had. The lobster roll was so sweet and delicious. It came with seasoned fries and pickles that are so good. The calamari was well prepared and came with a great spicy aioli. The salad was well dressed and very refreshing. And finally, the New England clam chowder. I have tried clam chowder twice in my life and didn't like it at all. And one of the places I tried it at was a very well known establishment in Seattle. But I thought B&G's chowder was so delicious. My wife was surprised that I kept eating it as she thought she was going to eat it all herself. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for great food and service and next time I am in Boston, I will...
