A Regal Morning at Elephantine: A Pastry Pilgrimage Worth the Alarm
The royal summons arrived not by scroll, but by Instagram algorithm. Our feeds, meticulously curated for aesthetic delight, were consistently graced by the flaky, glossy wonders of Elephantine Bakery. So, The Queen and I decreed a morning pilgrimage to this Boston sensation.
Heeding the warnings of weekend rushes, we orchestrated an early arrival. A pro tip for my fellow urbanites: a 7:30 AM arrival grants you not only your pick of street parking (a modern-day miracle) but also the distinct privilege of being first in line. The doors opened with a satisfying punctuality at 8 AM, and we were welcomed into the expanse.
And expansive it is. The space is a masterclass in airy, minimalist chic—all clean lines and abundant natural light. We walked in facing the main event: the pastry case. And oh, what a performance it was. Behind the glass, a veritable army of viennoiserie, cookies and tasty treats stood in glorious formation. The decision was, as one would expect, deliciously difficult.
I, of course, had to secure the objet d’desire that sparked this entire expedition: the legendary cinnamon bun, lavishly draped in a velvet cloak of icing. To complement it, a cream cheese lemon danish—a classic, but one demands perfection. My Queen, with a discerning eye, selected the rustic-carrot cake and the elegantly petite lemon Madeleine cake.
With our order placed and a discrete number placed upon our table, we settled in for the city’s most captivating theatre: the morning crowd. The energy shifted palpably as the space filled with a stylish, anticipatory hum. Just as the people-watching reached peak intrigue, our treasures arrived.
The Queen’s Madeleine was a masterwork. That iconic hump! The exterior offered a delicate, crystalline crackle that gave way to an impossibly soft, fragrant interior. A smile spread across her face—the silent, universal review of a pastry perfected.
My danish? A symphony in pastry form. The outer layers shattered into a thousand buttery shards, while the center was a pool of sublime, tangy cream cheese and bright lemon. The balance was impeccable. The cinnamon bun lived up to its social media hype—a pillowy, spiced dream that was neither too sweet nor too dense.
A word to the wise: if you're seeking a full savory breakfast spread, adjust your compass. This is a temple to the art of the pastry, the cookie, the cake. And what a divine temple it is.
We departed, boxed treasures in hand, already plotting our next return. Elephantine isn't just a bakery; it's an experience, and one worthy of your...
Read more5 stars, amazing coffee shop. Will get nit-picky with the details I would want to know before visiting here:
-Not a ton of outlets. This isn't really a work/study space, more of a special-outing cafe experience type place. -Separate M/F single-stall bathrooms (1 each). Extremely clean - which i'm sure is representative of their kitchen as well (not that you need to guess because they have a giant glass window into their kitchen where you can see how everything is made) and opulent decorating as well! -Still an order-at-the-counter place like most coffee shops (not table service) -Water dispenser was available with (fancy) glasses, seemed like it was consistently refilled for the ~3 hours i spent there. -Cashiers/servers/bussers were cheerful and welcoming. -Noise level is like a medium-loud restaurant with dishes/silverware clanging and chatter echoing an lots of hard surfaces. You're definitely still able to hear eachother talk no problem, but it's not going to be the soft and quiet coffee shop vibe. They do play some quiet piano music over the speakers, but you may not hear it too much over the crowd noise.
All in all, this has the air of an elegant European coffee house where aesthetics are prioritized, and the quality of the baked goods match the quality of their surroundings. The eggs and pastries I ordered were delicious. The chocolate in the mocha latte mayyyybe could have been a little more prominent (looks like they melt mini chocolate chips with the espresso but don't whip it in before pouring the milk), but i'm definitely splitting hairs there, still very tasty. I liked the texture of the croissant, where you could tell they put in the effort to cram in as many layers as possible, but when i bit into it, it didn't crumble and flake everywhere in a big mess like most croissants i've had (big plus in my book). I'm really glad they opened up this space here, they seemed to think of just about everything. I will definitely...
Read moreIf I could rate higher than 5 stars I would, ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE IN ALL ASPECTS!!
First of all, the atmosphere is so carefully curated, everything from the tiling, mirrors, wooden seating, to the unique bouquets of flowers is so gorgeous, I feel like i’ve been transported when I step into this place.
NOW the food… to die for, put simply. I have a hard time finding cardamom anything (true cardamom) and this place has an incredible cardamom coffee with a house made syrup thats sooooo good. They also have cardamom buns which I haven’t tried yet but I want to note.. there are NO places that sell cardamom buns in the city, so this is so exciting. The turkish poached eggs was so insanely delicious . It was a dish that was mostly simple ingredients with some unique touches that overall blew me away.
Service of course was incredibly kind and the couple who owns this place are AMAZING!!!
Huge fan I will definitely be returning as...
