I rarely leave reviews, but this place left me shaken. My daughter and I both have serious allergies to nuts, peanuts, and sesame—we told the staff clearly, and they still served a dish with sesame. Thank goodness my husband caught it before we ate. The rice and dumplings were dry, the noodles looked half-cooked, and the service felt rushed from the moment we sat down.
My autistic son had a brief meltdown, and instead of compassion, we were met with cold, judgmental stares from staff. When it came time to split the check, my husband tipped generously. The moment I selected “no tip” on my card, the staff began harassing us—scaring all three of my children, who have disabilities and anxiety. I was caught off guard. I suffer from trauma and anxiety, and I’ve never been yelled at like that in any other dining experience.
My husband pointed out that he had tipped, and the staff member (who seemed to be the manager) shouted at him, insisting I had to tip for my portion. We calmly explained we were dining as one family, and he’d already given a large tip—but she continued to yell, claiming that dining without tipping was not allowed. She then walked off, speaking aggressively to her staff while pointing and looking at us. I don’t speak their language, so I couldn’t understand what was said.
My daughter started crying and told me she was scared and wanted to leave. I immediately gathered my kids and stepped out while my husband finished speaking with staff. Since when is tipping not only required—but required twice for one bill?
If I had known any of this beforehand, we never would have walked in.
This place is not safe for people with allergies, not inclusive toward individuals with special needs, and not welcoming to families. Be cautious if you choose to visit.
I plan to report this restaurant to every platform I can—including the news, mayor’s office, and Attorney General—so other families don’t have to endure what we...
Read moreI wasn't sure what to expect from Fuchunju given the mixed reviews, but I ended up mostly enjoying my experience here. They may have improved their soup dumpling placement -- we only had one of 18 XLB break, and that was due to user error. Overall I would say that the soup dumplings are some of the best ones I've had in Boston, but the other dishes I had were nothing special.
We tried 3 different soup dumplings, and I would recommend the crabmeat XLB and scallop XLB. Both had plenty of hot, umami soup inside, a good amount of meat and crab/scallop, and a not-too-thick skin. We also tried the regular pork soup dumplings, and I didn't like the broth in these as much (a tiny bit more sour and less umami), but they were still good. The tongs they give you make it easy to transfer the dumplings to a spoon, and the dumplings are sturdy enough survive the transfer.
We also tried the old style Shanghai shumai, which tasted pretty good, but had nearly nonexistent amounts of meat and mushroom. If this had more meat/mushroom, it would be a great dish.
We got the shanghai fried noodles with pork, which was fine, but didn't have as much flavor or meat as I would like.
Lastly, we tried the pan-fried pork buns, which I wouldn't get again. They were pretty unremarkable and had no soup inside.
The restaurant is bustling, ordering is easy (done through a QR code), and service is good. The food comes out quickly and the servers are good about filling up water. The highlight for me was definitely the soup dumplings -- I would come back just for those -- but I wasn't impressed with...
