The meals came in a reasonable portion and reasonable price. Everything tasted good, expected I didn't like finding big pieces of chou with dark spots, that have no place in the salad. I like the fact that they cleaned before the next customer with something that has no smell. I had a difficult night and saw the place for the first time and got in thinking that I find a place to decompress. It was about 1h30 and I was alone. I didn't know I was not supposed to stay too long. I eat slow and ordered different things comparing to people who order one dish and leave. I would appreciate if they told me that, instead of when it was the time to pay the card that I took declined one 2 times one after another. I told the person who served me that I am going to call the bank to authorize the card. I did that, because I llike to use my credit card, when I was done I sat at the same place quietly waiting, when suddenly a another person come flying asking me about my license, and said that I don't have it, I asked about other online payments, then I told him before that try the card one last time, because I know I just called. He/She/? was telling me that nothing will happen during the weekend... I sat calmy because It was a credit card, I do have other debit cards that have money as well. I was not in a rush. I wonder if they were thinking that I came to steal there. I am glad I just remive the dirty looking lttuce and did not say anything. I would not do this favor to anybody. I easily just go on self date or with other people and spend hundreds. Then the two of them, right after the one who was serving me take the card anyway while talking nonsense, they were talking outloud about being relieved while people were staring. I did asked a worker if there is a time limit to be there, but the person did not know. The one serving me was busy and I let it go. I was surprised because that person acted nice before. I order a hot cider that wasn't good, and I returned it, I was not even charge for it. It was embarrassing I just took the salad left over go home and trash it, without saying a word. If they wanted me to leave even if it is a 24h place, they should tell me that before. It was my first time there. I was eating the whole time, and when I left there were some empty tables. I didn't occupy a whole table. I sat at the bar, and nobody was waiting outside when I got in nor left. I don't know about when while i was in. Anyway ,people came in group, just one girl came by herself after me. I didn't cause any problem. I don't think they could fit a group of people in one seat. I hope I remember and...
Read moreThe waitress was nice, but the manager was very rude and heartless.
TLDR: The manager kicks customers out for not ordering every 20 minutes and charges people for putting their own tea bags into the complimentary water.
So I went to this 24-hour diner after midnight because I had to wait for the train station to open up in a few hours, and I didn't want to stay in the freezing outdoors for that long. I ordered an egg benedict and some beef hashbrowns, which were pretty decent. After I finished the meal, I asked the waitress if I could stay for a bit longer to wait for the station to be opened; the waitress said yes as long as I moved from the booth to the bar table in case other after groups came in. (Both the booth and the bar were fairly empty at that time) However, after a few minutes, we moved to the bar, an Italian lady (who I later found out to be the manager) told me in an annoyed tone that I could not stay there if I weren't paying. According to the store policy on the menu, I had to keep ordering something every 20 minutes if I wanted to stay. I recall seeing the service fee rule for large groups at booth tables but didn't know that it applies to the bar counter as well, so I asked to see the menu again and perhaps order something more if that is indeed the case. The manager just replied in an argumentative tone, saying, "Are you gonna order or just trying to prove a point?" After telling her that I would need to look at the menu anyway if I wanted to order something, she reluctantly threw the menu at me. Fortunately, a group sitting nearby saw what happened and invited me to join them at their booth, to which I graciously agreed. After a few while, the manager came by and saw them putting their tea bags in the hot water provided by the diner and told them that since they served tea there, they would be charged for 3 cups of tea that they made themselves. In summary, the food was nice, and the waitress was decent, but the manager was rude and heartless and only cared...
Read moreThe cause of being an out of towner and making too many wrong turns led me to this magnificent gem of a diner. South Street Diner has everything right going for it. There was a line to enter the diner at 2 am and doormen to facilitate a smooth and steady transition into the diner. The food is very fresh, looks great and tastes amazing when you crave a late evening 2am breakfast meal. Last but not to say the least, from the line cooks to the serves were excellent. It has The most chill vibes from their synergy of providing above and beyond style of excellent service. I was very happy just watching the ladies work like the ants do without any qualms if someone accidently ordered twice. You see everything being cooked in front of you and the sounds and smells of sizzling food orders were making me crave for it even more. It was just fluid and everyone got along in harmony with a high volume of food orders being requested and everyone sang along with the music that was jammin' from the jukebox. The customers were singing in tune from separate tables. Beautiful! I wish all places were like this. It has the real family feel while dining there and not just the feed the people and grab your cash kind of deal. The prices are affordable $-$$ for an individual order. This was an accident that turned into a blessing. I was sad leave to continue my journey home because a few more wrongs turns were awaiting me ahead. Lol Please check out South Street Diner and support these hardworking ladies because we do not need another amazing such as this one closing down. I am happy just remembering this diner. Thank you to everyone working at South Street Diner for being the best at what you do. It is a small diner that is worth squeezing into. It did not have a ramp or wheelchair accessible entrance. A few steps to enter the diner. Street...
