I arrive and all of the tables outside were full. People were sitting on the sidewalk waiting to be called. I had to walk around those people and stand to the stand at the inner door and ask for my order. My drinks were not present but my food was. The place was crowded and bustling with staff. People literally brushing up against my body to pass me level of crowded. I went to stand outside as I waited for her to get my drinks. The holder was there, by my food, but for some reason my drinks were not present. Odd. She went to get my drinks I got them and could not get out of that place fast enough. Strangers rubbing up against me= UNHAPPY/GRUMPY/GROSSED OUT. It is a place where close quarters are the norm, so be prepared if you go there to eat. Now to the food:
Medley Crue: My eggs were not done in the way I ordered, which was a bummer and the cilantro avo sauce was basically a thin liquid that made everything soggy. It tasted okay, but definitely nothing to write home about. Almost no spinach or broccoli, so I was super bummed about this dish.
Huevos Rancheros: I got a call from Friendly Toast prior to my arrival where a staff member told me that to do the huevos rancheros and make it gluten free then needed to provide me with soft corn tortillas instead and switch the sauce. It was hard to hear her because of how loud it was wherever she made the call. This made no sense to be, but I said okay, sure. This tasted better, but it was like someone pinched on 8 black beans total. The potatoes were not seasoned well, just salt.
Pancake Monster: 2 Gluten free pancakes, swap of meat for corned beef hash, and two eggs over medium. I don't think the pancake mix sifted the ingredients together, or something because in 3 bites I got the strong taste of raising agent. Not okay. The rest of my pancakes tasted good excluding those bites. I wanted a crispy edge on the corned beef hash and thought it was going to come in a square but it was just a blob and not crisp at all. The homefries here were well seasoned and the best potatoes out of all 3 dishes.
2 Cranberry Juices: Both had no ice, which I am a fan of. One drink was 1/3 cranberry and the rest water or something, it was like there was a hint of cranberry, but nothing else. It also made the roof of my mouth itch. Weird. The other was good and tasted normal.
I am so grateful for a gluten free pancake, but after getting bites or raising agent 3 times in my meal, my eggs not cooked as I had requested one one dish, missing or little amount in others and the other dishes being just okay, I don't really recommend this place. Maybe it was because they were slammed and overbooked. Who knows, but I would say this is definitely a step up from IHOP. It is okay, but Life Alive tasted better to me.
Maybe I will try another dish or two and write an update. At this point, maybe seek this spot to eat when it is not a weekend, and then you may have...
Read moreIf you’re looking for a solid all-day breakfast and cocktail spot in the Back Bay, you have to try the Friendly Toast!
The Friendly Toast is known for their all-day brunch and their outstanding cocktail program. The menu is large and offers something for every taste!
If you’re a fan of all day brunch, this is the place for you! You can start off with their brunch appetizers, like the churro bites or the breakfast egg rolls.
I recommend the “Some Like It Tot”. Jumbo tater tots stuffed with melty Vermont cheddar cheese sauce. They’re topped with caramelized onion, sriracha glaze, scallion, and crumbled bacon.
They also have a huge selection of breakfast favorites and staples. You’ll find chicken and waffles, breakfast burritos, bowls, scrambles, omelettes, combos, Benedicts, Avocado Toast, breakfast sandwiches, and so much more!
If you are in the mood for lunch they do have a solid selection of handhelds. They have brunch-inspired burgers, grilled cheese, BLTs, and chicken sandwiches. They also offer bowls, salads, and pastas.
If you like pancakes and French toast, they’ve got a huge selection and some unique offerings. You’ll find Belgian waffles, pancakes, French toast, and much more! They have a solid selection of side options as well. You’ll find meats, fruits, and breads on the “sides” menu.
If you have a lighter appetite, they do have a “Tiny Toast” menu with lighter options. For the Fall, they had numerous specials. They had Pumpkin Pancakes, Pumpkin French Toast, and even a Pumpkin-Apple Bisque.
We stopped by for a late brunch on a beautiful fall afternoon. We were seated outside on the patio. Our server was phenomenal and ensured we were well taken care of. She was very helpful on recommendations and any questions we had.
Their cocktail program is truly incredible. If you can’t find a new favorite here, it doesn’t exist! They have a huge selection of unique libations, beverage flights, Bloody Mary, and Mimosas. For those who prefer a non-alcoholic option, they offer a nice selection of N/A choices. I recommend the Raspberry Lemonade!
I ordered the Breakfast Burrito with Chorizo. I ended up sending it back as it was just soggy and to be honest, tasteless. It just had zero flavor to it. The home fries were also horrendous.
Our server removed it from the bill and I ordered the “Friendly Toast Benny”. It’s your traditional eggs Benedict. The eggs were poached perfectly and the hollandaise sauce hit just right! I upgraded to the tots for an additional $2 to replace the tasteless home fries.
The other person in my party loved the mimosas! They went with the “Sam’s Garden Omelette” which has spinach, broccoli, mushroom, tomato, goat cheese, and garlic. It comes with your choice of toast and home fries. We also decided to share a side order of fresh fruit!
I would highly recommend this spot for those looking for an all day brunch and/or...
Read moreThis is an amazing breakfast/brunch spot with a creative menu, ample outside seating, and a small park directly next to it where your children can play and you can watch them while you have a drink and brunch, a breakfast appetizer, or a full breakfast. We were in town visiting, and this was recommended by a local friend. I have always wondered why breakfast menus can't be more creative. It is always the same old fare. If you are looking for more, the Friendly Toast is it. I don't know about you, but I am not used to breakfast restaurants having appetizers. But Friendly Toast does. You can choose from churro bites, breakfast empanadas, egg rolls, or cheese stuffed tater tots. They also have a separate drink menu for Bloody Mary's, another for Mimosas and another for all other alcoholic drinks to make for a fun brunch. I had heard they served large portions, and we had a long day of site seeing, so I did not get a drink or appetizer though I wanted both. Instead, I got the special- Waffle Lotta Pride -Fruity Pebble stuffed French toast. It was beyond amazing. You would think from looking at it that it would put you in a food coma and be too sweet, but it was just right. It had fruity pebbles mixed into the waffle batter, so they are not the predominant flavor. That comes from the cream cheese icing drizzle that both stuffs the waffle sandwich and is drizzled on top. It also has whipped cream and a bit of sparkle sugar, as well as rainbow candy to top it off. I never would have thought to put cream cheese icing glaze on a waffle but it works. I loved it. They also have gluten free pancakes, vegan pancakes and Strawberry French toast stuffed with chocolate ganache with cheesecake glaze. I mean! C’mon! I wish I could eat breakfast here everyday! For those who like savory, there are FIVE types of eggs bene (including a gluten free one), breakfast burritos (including a gluten free one) and all types of omelets. My sister had avocado toast that came with a fruit salad. She liked it a lot, but wished they used sour dough bread. I could see all around us at the outside tables that people were excited and happy by their food. The server was welcoming and attentive and continuously filled our water glasses and checked on us to make sure we were good. He answered all our questions about the menu in a non- rushed manner, even though the restaurant was busy. We got there about 5 minutes before the opened on a Sunday, and there was already a line. We had signed in on the app to try to reserve a spot, but we still had to join the line. The hostess said they liked to honor those who were there waiting, so get there early and expect a wait. It is very well worth...
