I've been going to top bread for years now for the great quality of food, even driving an hr just to get it. But unfortunately, my most recent visit completely changed how I feel about this place, and I won’t be returning due to the shockingly poor customer service.
While checking out, I placed my tray on a surface where I had seen other trays before, unaware that it was actually a fridge someone was trying to access. One of the staff members immediately screamed at me in a high pitched tone, “AH AH AH!”—as if I were an animal. I quickly apologized, saying, “I’m so sorry!” But instead of accepting it, she mocked me by repeating “Yeah, SORRY” in a sarcastic voice.
I was stunned by how aggressive and demeaning her tone was over such a minor, and honest mistake. At the time, I still went through with the purchase, but in hindsight, I regret it. No customer—or human being—should be spoken to like that. It’s incredibly disappointing, especially because I used to love this bakery. I never expected to be treated so disrespectfully, and I can’t bring myself to support a place where this kind of behavior...
Read moreTop Bread is my favorite Chinatown spot for hot milk tea (香港奶茶). They have lots of styles of bubble tea on offer, plus tarts, pastries and of course, bread. The staff here is terrific!
The milk tea here is the best in Chinatown. I have purchased it other purveyors and gotten an upset stomach; but it's always fresh at Top Bread. Their egg custard tarts are also excellent, top tier if not the best in the area. Why four stars and not five? The bread!
The bread at Top Bread is not top. It's "OK" for sure, just not imbued with the quality ingredients I would expect or desire. For example, the Green Tea bread looks artificially colored, and tastes remarkably bland as if little or no tea was used to bake it. I have purchased Green Tea bread and cakes at other Chinatown spots, and found the flavors richer and more satisfying. I do hope that Top Bread's owners up their...
Read moreThere are several bakeries in the area, so why come to Top Bread?
I go for the freshly baked loaf of taro bread, perfectly cooked every time: soft, dense, and stays fresh for a whole week. Cut a thick slice for splendid toast.
There is a large variety of small buns with different fillings like red bean, butter cream, coffee cream. These are similar to what you might find in the bakeries nearby.
Almond cookies, Hong Kong style egg tarts, and Portuguese egg tarts are always available. Try toasting at home if you didn't buy them hot from the oven.
One day I might try the cheesecakes and specialty cakes for celebrations, because they have seem to have nice light flavors with lots of...
