One of the top two omakase spots I’ve experienced in Boston.
Chef Zheng, an alum of Sushi Nakazawa in NYC, made a bold move by opening an omakase spot in Downtown Boston. With many such spots popping up around the city, I initially had reservations about whether Wa Shin could stand out from its competitors. Thankfully, the experience not only met but exceeded my expectations, placing it firmly among the top two omakase spots I've visited in the city.
Wa Shin crafts the ideal ambiance for the Grand Omakase with its Hinoki Wood Counter encircling a spacious open kitchen. The soothing Asian music in the background complements an interior thoughtfully designed by Chef Zheng himself, which merges traditional Japanese Minka house aesthetics with modern elements.
The 18-course omakase comprises two appetizers, 12 nigiris, a handrail, and some desserts. Both appetizers, the Kumamoto oysters and Firefly Squid, were outstanding, but the squid was particularly impressive. The sweet miso sauce paired beautifully with the squid’s rich flavors, and the delicate crunch from the Japanese yam added a pleasing textural contrast.
The nigiri selection was a good balance between traditional varieties such as Hotate, Salmon, and Tuna, and unique pieces like Isaki and Nodoguro. As expected from a Nakazawa alum, Chef Zheng’s mastery of the sushi aging process was evident, and it showed particularly in the texture and flavors of the fatty pieces like Nodoguro and Chu Toro. Some of my other favorites included the Aji, enhanced with a flavorful chive and ginger paste, and the fatty O Toro.
What truly distinguished Wa Shin from other top omakase spots in the city was its exceptional service. The staff went above and beyond, from pulling out chairs to providing coasters for phones and meticulously setting each dish. Chef Zheng also paid close attention to detail, routinely wiping down the sushi plate to prevent fish oils from mixing and affecting the flavors of each piece. Unlike many chefs who solely concentrate on preparing sushi, he was also very personable and friendly.
Highly recommend trying Wa Shin while they still offer an opening special price. Would definitely come back once they update their menu for...
Read moreStepping into Wa Shin, helmed by the illustrious Chef Sky, was like entering an oasis of tranquility from the loud, hot city street. The zen-like atmosphere, accompanied by soothing instrumental Japanese music, immediately set the tone for an unforgettable dining experience.
The restaurant’s minimalist Japanese-inspired decor is a testament to elegance and simplicity, featuring Hanoki wood interiors, meticulous bonsai trees, and a display of exquisite Japanese knives. These elements, combined with top-tier plates and glassware, elevated our dining experience.
Seated at the intimate 10-person counter, we were treated to a front-row seat of culinary mastery. The attentive and professional wait staff ensured our every need was met while we watched Chef Sky and his team craft each dish with precision and artistry.
Our omakase experience was nothing short of spectacular. Each course showcased the highest quality ingredients and fish, allowing the natural flavors to shine through. The dishes were thoughtfully complemented by subtle ingredients; a purist's delight in sushi. We selected a fantastic bottle of South African Chardonnay, which paired perfectly with the courses.
Wa Shin is a haven for those who not only appreciate the art of omakase but also revel in the theater of watching master chefs at work. Chef Sky's dedication to his craft and his ability to create a multisensory dining experience make Wa Shin a must-visit destination. I highly recommend Wa Shin to anyone seeking a sublime culinary journey that engages...
Read moreI was just in town for the weekend to visit some friends on Saturday and was extremely excited to get a seat at the counter on a Friday night. From the time I arrived to the time I left, the service staff and Chef made me feel like a guest in their home. I was the only solo diner at the counter, everyone else was clearly on a date. They seated me first, and directly in front of Chef. Throughout the meal I felt he gave me extra attention to ensure I was having a good time and enjoying the meal, and we shared some conversation about omakase counters in other cities that we were mutually familiar with.
The food was absolutely exceptional and thoughtfully curated from start to finish. Chef is one of the very best.
The service staff was among the best I've seen at any fine dining restaurant. I didn't count how many people were helping with the service, but my water never dipped under half full, the sake experts were on hand to answer questions like a sommelier, and after each course if there were any condensation droplets or smudges in front of you they were wiped up so the place setting was as flawlessly cleaned and ready for the next piece as the Chef's work station.
It was incredible and very clear Chef & team take great pride in their work. I will be back next time...
