This place exceeded my expectations. I only wish I had more time and more people to play with. I was just passing through during a family vacation to the more touristy parts of Branson. Where I'm from, we're a bit spoiled for choice when it comes to places with free board game libraries (they typically make their money on food and drink), so I was hesitant to pay the $5 cover charge, in part because I was alone and staying a short time while family slept in the hotel room.
What I didn't expect was just how well-maintained and curated their library would be. Everything is well-categorized and labelled for things like player count, cooperative vs. competitive, genre, complexity, etc. They even have printed guides to help beginners select games. They also have proper gaming tables like the ones people buy on Kickstarter. Perhaps the most amazing thing was that they ask people to return games to a designated shelf so they can go through and verify the return and organization of all components. As such, all games were well-maintained with components separated logically into bags, just like many gamers do with their own games at home. Ultimately, that $5 cover charge goes very far in ensuring that your experience playing here will be the absolute best possible, and so it's worth every penny. I would especially highly recommend this place for beginners, not because they wouldn't be suitable for more experienced players, but just because I've never seen another board game cafe/shop so set up to guide players to the kind of experience they're looking for.
The retail section is relatively small but decently well-stocked. I especially liked that they had used games for sale at competitive prices. I didn't verify, but based on the stickers, I think their other games are discounted from MSRP as well, which is relatively uncommon for hobby game shops, probably more so in touristy areas.
Shout out to Peyton, who was willing to teach and play a quick game with me before starting his shift. I showed up without a group, asked the first person I saw if they wanted to play, and he was more than happy to put down what he was doing despite the...
Read moreThe boardgame Cafe is a nice change of pace from the ordinary forms of entertainment found in the Branson area. When you enter you are asked to pay a humble cover charge that is very family and large group conscious ( also perfect for a couple or group of 3 or 4). The entry fee allows you to enter and play any game in their extensive library for as long as you care to stay. You can also leave and return in the same day if you want to go somewhere else in the middle of your day (like going to eat at that restaurant for instance). You don't have to leave though because they do have a snack bar inside that is less expensive then most any restaurant. The staff is super-friendly and helpful. They are able to help you find a game and get you started--even teaching you how to play if necessary. Some helpful pointers before going: They have several shelves full of games, it can be a bit overwhelming. I would recommend visiting their website prior to your visit. All of their games are listed on their website. Taking the time to look over the list picking a few that interest you will make your time much more fun-focused. In addition you can use the internet to find the rules of the game or a "how to" video that will teach you to play the game so you don't spend too much of your time wading through which game and how to play. They have a tiny parking area so be prepared to walk a bit, especially if you are meeting people there instead of carpooling. You can park on the side street or in the downtown area. Overall the Boardgame Cafe is a fun place to hang out and play games with...
Read moreWe love board games and were pleased to find this fun store with food beverages to sit and try out some new games. A husband and wife duo run the establishment and they are as sweet as the candy they sell to patrons. We decided to play a game that was a newer version of a game we already have, Azul. The owner came over to our table and offered to tell us how to play without us even asking. He did a great job of explaining efficiently and clearly. The tables are designed expertly with felt tops and drink holders all along the edges. We all ordered coffee beverages that were delicious and super awesome to have access to while gaming. They had a little mixup with my husband's and my drink and insisted on making it right and gave us a bunch of free candy (sugar rush). They offer a discount on their games to customers buying a day pass (only $5/day). The owners stayed late to explain more games to us and give us honest recommendations. If you enjoy board games, coffee, or just a good time, I highly recommend you stop in and support this family-owned business!!! You will not be...
