This used to be my parents' favorite thai restaurant but our experience last saturday has been really negative..

My mom went in ahead of us as I had kids to wrangle put of the car.. we were hungry and eager to have some good thai food but although my mom had been seated and waiting for us, we never got our menus.. we waited awhile before someone came by with the menus, before she set them down she said that the kitchen would be closing at 9 so we would need to put in our orders quickly..

Knowing this we immediately scanned the menu, and chose and looked to the staff who milled around the register talking to each other, seemingly avoiding our attempts to call them over.. it took some time but eventually someone came over.. my dad ordered first and our orders followed.. and we waited again..

We had just come from the beach taking in a lovely sunset and were thirsty and hungry.. but no water ever came.. we eventually had to wave someone down and ask for it and he replied that he would let a waitress know.. we did get waters after a time..

We got all our food except for the first thing my dad ordered.. after it became apparent something was wrong I went over to the register which was the staff's favorite place to hide away and talk and interrupted their conversations to ask about the status of my dad's order.. the waitress then brought up the receipt and told the cook he had forgotten something.. so I said never mind, don't cook it and went back to our table to finish our meal..

I meant to make sure that the dish that was ordered and not received was not included in our final ticket but we were so upset by the flippancy of the staff that we just paid and left thinking only about the amount and how much we should have paid..

As we got up the only other table that was occupied also got up to leave and that's when the gaggle of staff scattered from their hideaway near the register.. I went to the register to see if there was a business card and our lovely and attentivesarcasm waitress was dramatically and loudly saying "finally! Let's close up and get out of...

Edit: 10/25. They are back to their excellent cooking again which I am very pleased about. I have eaten in Khun Thai a couple time since my bad take out experiences and the food is great again. I would still recommend not getting take out if you can eat in because the food it just fresher that way.

Edit: 9/30/22 They must have a new cook because I found that what I have recently ordered within the last couple months has been awful. Lunch time orders if that makes any difference. The eggs rolls were soggy and both my friend and I found them inedible. They were frozen "store bought" egg rolls. I recognized them from an Asian store I shop at and other Asian places I have eaten. That is OK. But at least cook them until they are crispy and cooked to the interior. I know egg rolls are not traditional Thai fare but had they been crispy we could have eaten them. Same thing for the Vegetable Tempura which has always been excellent. The vegetables were not cooked at a high enough temperature which resulted in the veggies also being soggy like the egg rolls. PLEASE bring back the other cook as I would love to continue to eat here.

Truly the best food in town. The Coconut Shrimp are best I have had anywhere, while their Ginger Lovers and Rainbow are as good as I have had in Thailand. Even their fried rice, which I generally hate, is fresh and delicious. I always take out of town guest their. The only dish I've tried which I did not like was the Drunken Noodles with wide noodles. The noodles all stuck together and I discarded. But every other dish...

I have dietary restrictions and wasn't even feeling like Thai but it seemed like the best option granted what's in town (we were on vacation). They mark on their menu which options can be gluten free, which I really appreciated, especially since it's much less common along the coast compared to Portland.

I was so pleasantly surprised. I got the seafood clay pot and it was delicious. The calamari was a bit rubbery, but all the other components were great - the shrimp was perfect, the mussels and salmon were really nice, too. The actual curry base was extremely tasty, and the vegetables were nicely cooked. A lot of times with Thai places I've found that they kinda toss the components together and vegetables can be undercooked. Not so here - they were just right. Salad rolls were good too; I can be picky about those, and these ones passed muster. Peanut sauce was good, rolls were a comfortable size, and the filling was good.

I ordered takeout and my food was ready in like 20 min, and the dude at the bar had a fun vibe.

All told, I went in thinking I'd probably get meh, and came out pretty much raving about them. My friend got food somewhere else and wound up eating the other half of mine, haha. 10/10,...

We're visiting Brookings and decided to give this restaurant a try. We ordered fried calamari, chicken curry, honey duck and duck fried rice. The calamari was great. The curry came with a bowl of rice. The rice has a strand of hair so we told the waitress. She took it back and all was good. We ordered an extra bowl of rice and that also has a hair embedded in it. This time, we did not even bother letting the waitress know. The food were delicious but very unsanitary to find hair on the rice, twice. We should've taken a picture of it. If you'd like to try this place, keep your eyes on the food. They should wear a hairnet. Hence, I'm giving the food 2 stars because of that.

The service was great- seated quickly. Appetizer and drinks were timely. The calamari was a bit chewy and overly breaded. The house batter had an after taste that was unpleasant, but not horrible. The house tilapia special was beautiful for the eyes not the taste buds. Large chunks of pineapple, tomato and green onion overwhelmed the palate not to mention required cutting to eat bite size portions. The tilapia was overly breaded and lacked seasoning. It's as if the cook has flipped through too many food magazines versus tasting the food served. This was clear by the cilantro left on the stem...unpleasant to eat.

We decided to take out dinner on 9-27-24 as the restaurant was very busy. Contrary to many reviews here, we were very disappointed about the food. We ordered lemon grass chicken Pad Thai, which was just "okay." The disappointing part was the pepper steak dish which wasn't just mediocre or bad, but uneatable! Why not charge five bucks or so more and serve your guests real beef and some decent vegetables instead of a few slivers of cabbage? Not sure what kind of meat was used here but it was simply disgusting. No return visit to Khun Thai for us!
