On my way to see Lawrence of Arabia on Labor Day (today), it was 11:30 while the movie was to begin at noon. Rather than order something in the theater, where the food is good but relatively expensive, I figured Asian Box might be better.
The Miss Jones has much more protein than what's available in the theater, lots of pork, plus a hard-boiled egg. Also there's the julienne carrots and bean sprouts with a little bit of mint and Vietnamese fish sauce.
Their fish sauce isn't quite up to par. Likely they don't use the Three Crabs brand as the base, which everybody knows is the one and only for that. The proprietor apparently leaves the fish sauce up to the Executive Chef, whom of course would insist upon making her/his own. Totally understandable, as a matter of pride on her part. Thing is though, fish sauce is very tricky, partly because of the wide range of salt in your reduction, depending on the dried fish you use. So it would be really hard to make a consistent fish sauce from scratch. Better just to go with the Three Crabs and add the mirin or rice vinegar or however it's done at all the other Vietnamese restaurants. Anybody can make it consistently the same.
Definitely I'll go back, they're really good, and very...
Read moreCame here with a few friends. We haven't really been to the area, so we thought Asian Box sounded good. They have signature boxes and you can also make your own.
The inside of the restaurant is super hot. It made me suspicious about the quality of the food being served, as the kitchen is open to the dining area.
We decided to eat outside because of this. I ordered a tofu box. I recommend getting lots of sauce because it was super bland.
One thing I found disappointing was that a shrimp had snuck into my box! Now I'm not completely vegetarian but I am transitioning. For those of you who have been vegetarian for awhile or are allergic to shrimp, keep this in mind! I know it would be disappointing to realize you had consumed an animal because of someone else's carelessness of preparing your meal.
This was super overpriced for the quality of the food. I ended up throwing away more than half of the food because it was just so unappetizing. If you really want Asian food, please go somewhere else. As an Asian, I was very disappointed with the flavors...
Read moreI've gone to Asian Boxes in Palo Alto and SF, and this is the worst in terms of order accuracy and timeliness. Like others have said, they basically forget to read modifications. I've bitten into my banh mi to find jalapenos and am allergic. I've also bitten into a burnt banh mi roll, or one not toasted enough and was kinda gummy.
I've also stood around and waited 10-15 minutes after the promised pickup time for food. This has happened multiple times. Because of long waits, sometimes I'm given a free drink coupon, which makes me wonder how common this problem is.
It wasn't until going to Asian Box at the Asian Art Museum did I realize that the food could be prepared well and taste great.
I love the fact it's all gluten free and really want to support this place, but they're making it...
