My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
TL;DR: Weak coffee, lackluster gumbo, and severely undercooked beignets. Won't be returning.
Let's start that the service was prompt and kind, no issues with that at all. The food though...
Having had my fair share of beignets, coffee, and gumbo in New Orleans proper, I was ecstatic to see the high ratings of this establishment when we decided to make the trip up here for a weekend getaway.
Ordered the gumbo special (2 pints gumbo with a half-dozen beignets), along with a cafe au lait, and a couple other drinks for the kids.
Beignets... Too dense and underdone, completely closed structure, with an unfortunate taste of raw flour when biting in. No puffiness, no lightness. They're hot and all, obviously fresh out of the fryer, but... This isn't a proper beignet. At best, it wasn't fried long enough. Someone needs to up the Quality Control game here. Also... They're pretty small.
The gumbo...
I consider gumbo a damned near perfect soup. So much flavor can be packed into a little bowl. Not here though.
The broth is downright watery and under-seasoned. It lacked any sort of meaningful mouthfeel. It's actually really strange to see all the okra in there for how watery it is. It's spicy, sure, but it's not a mouthful of deeply spiced and toasted-roux thickened broth that makes a genuine bowl. The spicy heat was more just straight heat than a nice amalgamation of spices that happened to generate some tingle on the tongue.
The chicken is a travesty of seems-like-non-homemade, questionable quality. If it IS homemade, they need to change their recipe or the source of their chicken because something is waaaaay off. It smacked of commercially mass-produced refrigerated grilled chicken that was reheated when it was thrown in the soup. Please correct us if we're wrong though... but that's how it tasted to us. There was also just a couple little slices of sausage in each of our pints, seemed... Lacking.
Cafe au lait... In a word, weak. Way too little milk, and yet somehow also very little coffee flavor. This is a double whammy. Didn't even want to drink it after a few sips. I guess the watered down thing is a going theme here.
Kids had a coffee frappe and a vanilla bean coffee... They drank it, can't say more on that.
Low atmosphere rating mostly due to the lack of space to eat. Cutely painted...
Read moreOn November 23, 2023, my family and I went to a N'Orlin's in the River Place Shops in Frakenmuth, and although we found the food to be just as good as advertized the service was the exact opposite. A deal had been advertised for two pints of jumblia and a half dozen beignets for $22.99, which we hadn't realized until after the fact, but was not brought up by the worker taking my order either. I had purchased a half dozen beignets and a quart of jumblia for $32.28, not including dipping sauces that brought the total to $37.28. Mind you, two pints is the same as one quart. After our order was ready, my father had approached a worker about the deal advertised and asking if we could still get it being that a quart is the same as the two pint deal stated above. The worker tried looking in the system, but ultimately had to get the manager involved. When she has stated talking, the manager had a disgusted look on her face as if it was the end of the world to do her job. She then walked up to my father and I with the least amount of respect to show. She said that there was nothing she could do, but did not attempt to do anything herself, I guess it was too big of an ask. Both workers we had interacted with had said that the transaction had gone through, so no reimbursement would be made, I guess that meant no attempt would be made either. I paid for a $10 dollar container with the exact same contents as the advertised deal. Moral of the story, DO NOT waste your time at the N'Orlin's in River Place shops, I highly recommend making the small journey down the road heading south to the other N'Orlins location. The manager especially showed an incredible lack of respect and care for her job, and was unltimately unconcerned with the circumstances, and her body language was that of a toddler that did not want to clean their room and scraped by doing the...
Read moreWhen I visited Frankenmuth with my mom, we had to try this place out, especially since I had heard from friends that just visited New Orleans and tasted Beignets and went on and on about them. So we go inside, it's a cute cafe. The owner was working and we got 3 beignets and he said, I'll throw another one in, so there isn't any fighting. We sat down and man there was a lot of powdered sugar, lol...it was everywhere. But they were hot and fresh and so delicious. I took the two extra home and ate them when I walked in the door, lol, guess I didn't want to wait. Then I went back to Frankenmuth with my husband, and I told him about it and told him we had to go here. He obliged and wanted to sit and eat them there. Again, the same owner was working and he said the same thing, and we got four beignets for the price of three. We both ate two, at that time, and enjoyed every second of it. My coat and lips were covered in powdered sugar, both times. Hahaha. Give it a try, they are light, and airy, but at the same time doughy and crispy. Hard to describe, but not like a donut, definitely not like a donut, so don't go in here expecting it to be a donut. Very friendly as well, the owner made small talk with us about UofM and Ann Arbor, after we told him that was where we were from. Very nice, we...
