We were starving after a few hours of walking around at the nearby Botanical Garden, so we needed some nourishment! I had heard about a vegan soul food place in the area, so that’s where we headed. An excellent idea because Squash the Beef is a fantastic place.
We dined in, but I saw on the website that they have a pretty cool truck that you can book for catered food right at your event. That sounds pretty awesome to me - fun and delicious plant-based food made on the spot for your guests!
Back to my experience — I had a delicious Philly Cheesesteak sandwich that was totally great. The plant-based slices of steak were smothered with cheese and sautéed onions and peppers and mushrooms and tucked inside a toasted sub, with a side of fries. Amazingly melty and gooey and oh so tasty! Definitely polished the whole thing off. Just thinking about it makes me hungry!
I will definitely return the next time I am on that side of town! I recommend that you try it if you are in the neighborhood because it will blow your mind. All your preconceived ideas about vegan food will go out the window and you will find yourself loving...
Read moreThe first time I had Squash the Beef my cousin had brought it to me and I instantly fell in love. She told me the food had come from this food truck and they travel different places. It just so happened that 2 weeks later they were going to be in Lakewood so I knew I had to go try them again. This time I brought my family and they loved it too! Especially the lemonade! Squash the Beef is located about 45 minutes from me & sometimes they’ve been at events that were further… But I will make that drive EVERY time. Not only is the food AMAZING.. the owner is super hospitable, and the prices for the portions are great. Honestly you wouldn’t know that you weren’t eating meat with some of the options. 12/10 would recommend. But be careful the food is so good once you start there’s...
Read moreWent to Soul Food Sunday and got one of everything. My boyfriend got the bbq jackfruit dinner with green beans, mac and cheese, collard greens, and the fried chick'n with the kale lemonade. He also ate the Huff Delicious Treats Lemon Pound Cake. I got the meatless meatloaf, with the fried chick'n, wild rice, sweet potatoes, and collard greens. Plus the peach mango lemonade.
It was all amazing! The meatless meatloaf had a nice heavy texture and the fried chick'n needs no sauce. The sweet potatoes blew me away with bold sweet, yet savory flavor. I always love the collards and really enjoyed the wild rice.
This chef knows his flavors and textures! I would be one happy vegan if I could afford to have them cater my every meal. Until then, my mouth lacks the...
