donut choices are very, very similar and in some cases the same as Blue Star Donuts, my all time favorite. I was looking for something in Corvallis so I didn't have to go to Portland for my donut fix. So I tried a few flavors at Dough Hook. The creme brulee, passion fruit, marionberry, apple fritter, coconut, maple bacon are all almost exactly the same as Blue Star varieties, some with a little twist. What I've noticed is these donuts look and taste good, but the quality isn't on par overall with Blue Star. the custard is tasty, but tastes like a cheaper version with cornstarch, and sticky, and I didn't see any vanilla specks but they assured me they use whole vanilla bean. The chocolate covered boston creme chocolate tasted like Hershey's syrup. At Blue Star they use Valhrona chocolate. the dough reminds me of a sweet bread rather than typical donut dough. Read moreI've had a lot of donuts, especially from local shops like this one. It's my personal opinion that this shop has the best donuts I've ever eaten. If you, like myself, think that donuts are often too sweet, then these are the donuts for you.
The texture of the donuts themselves are like the tastiest bread you've ever had. The bread itself is not very sweet, allowing you to choose from whatever sweet toppings you prefer.
In our family, the adults prefer the double chocolate, French toast, and creme brulee, along with the cruffins and fruit pastries. The kids love the oreo and fruity pebbles.
I will say that the maple flavored donuts were a little underwhelming, but I think that's the flavor they are going for. I preferred the French toast as I mentioned.
We're looking forward to trying the cronuts next time we are in. Can't...
Read moreLocated in the shopping center next to Goodwill on 9th St, Dough Hook Bake Shop is easily the best new doughnut place in Corvallis. This is a walk up shop, not a sit down cafe, but it does not matter with baked goods this delicious. Most will go there for the amazing array of sweet doughnuts, but I was more focused on the savory items, and they did not dissappoint. The ham and Swiss croissant was one of the best I have ever eaten. The Croissant was light and fluffy, with layer upon layer of flaky buttery goodness. The ham was not your typical thin sliced ham, but was instead a think slab of country style ham that that made you feel like you were eating something substantial. I also immensely enjoyed the other items I tried out too! Just go experience this place for yourself. You will be happy...
