Well...I have been meaning to visit this establishment for many years, and I am so glad that I did. First of all, to get there I had to drive through parts of Dallas that I have never been to in the past 23 years that I have lived here. Seems like gentrification is STRONG in this part of town. In spite of all that, Jimmy's vibe feels like it has been there through every recent and not so recent neighborhood developments. We picked, I think, a lucky time to visit - Thursday afternoon at about 1pm. Parking was easy (street), and there were not too many people in the store. When you walk in, you instantly feel like you belong. There is nothing pretentious about the environment. It feels cozy and inviting. The space is packed with fresh produce, frozen premades, refrigerated house sauces and such. Of course, the main attraction is the deli. Lots of different cuts of meats and sausages, etc...Next time I go back I will need to spend more time exploring the different deli offerings, but I was feeling a little overwhelmed, so the counter person directed my attention to a more simplified menu. My barometer sandwich is always an Italian. I gave my order and then killed 15 minutes browsing the groceries before my name was called. Sandwiches had a decent heft...we took them outside and stood at a small table and ate. The bread was fresh, the deli cuts were tasty and didn't overpower each other. I added lettuce, pickles, mustard, chili tomatoes, and vinaigrette. All of the flavors came together, especially in the middle of the sandwich. Really reminded me of the Grinders I used to get from real delis back in the day before Subway and it's ilk. If you are planning on visiting, then I will say don't hesitate! Fair warning, there does not seem to be any sort dedicated dining area. I will definitely be going back. Next sandwich will most likely be a meatball or sausage or combo of each. Btw, banana split cream soda...
Read moreOkay so I am here to say @blondeswhoeat from IG lead me here to try out their Italian beef sandwich. I had heard of Jimmy's, but never thought about going there to eat. But after watching her tutorial on thus sandwich I was like let me slide through to see if it holds up to an authentic Chicago style IB sammich. Here my verdict... Hoagie: A Sliced beef: C+ Hot peppers: A+ Parking: C- Customer Service: A Price: A- I ordered the IB sammich double dipped w/hot peppers & extra meat. Waited about 12 minutes for my order to be ready, paid & left. $11.99 + tax for the sammich w/ no fries, was about average for Dallas I guess. However I had to remember I wasn't on the Westside of Chicago ordering the special of the day. (Plus all meals in Chi-town come with fries) Guess I am spoiled that way...lol Drove all the way home, with that aroma lingering in my car. So, once I washed my hands, prayed to the foodie God's it was about to go DOWN!!! The hoagie was perfect!!! Saturated with just enough juices to make it soft, but still firm enough to withhold the meat. Speaking of meat...it was JAMMED packed with it...SCORE, however you could tell that the meat wasn't resting in the juice because it had NO flavor whatsoever. That was the only downside to this sammich. Would I try it again? SURE...would I drive through rush hour traffic on a Friday for it again...NOPE. On another note...they need to invest in expanding their parking situation. Due to the fact they're located on a corner lot the parking is minimal. Thank goodness for the empty lot...
Read more3/2025 - Yards and yards of sausage this last Friday of March. Some interesting greens in the produce mix and better tomatoes as the year warms. No more Mancini roasted peppers in stock as the family says they can't be found. Contadina, the only canned tomato paste? C'mon... Bulk Parmesean still is the best price in the Southwest and hasn't changed for at least 15 years! Lots of hidden gems if you'll just read the product boards above the market counters.
Update 29 July 2024 - There are still east Texas tomatoes coming in and Pittsburgh peaches. There were also more specialty sausages in the the meat case but didn't have time to explore. How I got in and out at noon is memorable.
If you are able to buy Maxwell Street sausages, which Jimmy's now carries, do so quickly. They are remarkable and snappy and juicy with the right amount of seasoning and spice to appeal to all sausage lovers, wherever your tastes and geography reside.
Update 11 May - Canned tomato products have jumped drastically in price. Sclafani and Stanislas products in particular. 20-25% increases. Mike says freight costs have doubled. Parmesan is still the best price in Dallas and nobody beats their wine sales.
There is no better Italian sausage between the coasts than Jimmy's. Bulk Parm is the best price in the world. Always the Hawaiian basil and bulk mushrooms. E TX tomatoes coming soon. Cuban sandwich is the sleeper on the menu. Great wines from regions you never knew at prices you...
