Sushi Ave has two locations, one right on Decatur Square and the other on Ponce. You can find tables outside in the courtyard, there's a sushi bar and of course seating inside. I was looking forward to dining outside but there were too many flies in the area so I decided to dine inside.
The sushi was just okay for me at 4 stars but the service is outstanding at 5 stars. I was immediately welcomed, checked on periodically while I was waiting for a friend by the hostess. Our waiter was very pleasant, answered our questions with a smile, gave honest recommendations and didn't rush us. Everyone was very friendly, even the Sushi Chefs greeted us. It's a very warm and welcoming environment.
I love sushi and was looking forward to this meal for a few days so I ordered my favorites: Tempura Shrimp - $6.50 it tasted like something was missing, nothing special and tasted like TJs brand Seaweed Salad - $3.50 tasted fresh and good taste One cool thing about their menu is that have pictures of all of their items which makes it helpful with ordering especially if it's something you're not familiar with. They even have drawings of their rolls which lists the ingredients, it's like a sushi diagram. Love it! Rainbow Roll - 8 pieces - large pieces of fish and large rolls Shrimp Tempura Roll - 8 pieces Yellowtail Shashimi - 2 large meaty pieces
Overall it's a decent spot in the area, honestly the service is what would have me as a repeat customer.
In addition to sushi and sashimi offerings, Sushi Ave serves traditional Japanese cuisine. These dishes include teriyaki plates and Japanese noodles such as...
Read moreI've had the displeasure of eating here three times now at my coworker's insistence. This third time I felt the moral obligation to speak out against the high rating. Mind you, the service here is excellent. The food is so terrible in quality that it warrants one star in my book. I eat fish raw. With that comes a certain trust that the fish is fresh, clean and kept at a safe temperature. My experience has left me feeling disgusted sand questioning if the fish is safe. I really tried to give this place another chance. I love the texture of fish. Salmon is usually light and buttery. Each time here it's been strangely dry and slightly bitter. Much of the fish tastes off in this way. They also serve an incredibly putrid fish with the sashimi deluxe and others that is white, slimy and stiff at the bottom. Hardly edible at all. Slimy seems too tame of a description. This last trip, the rice also had a slight bitterness to it. I typically add vinegar to rice for preserving freshness. It tasted like a vinegar gone spoiled. I was beyond disappointed. I'd recommend heading to any of the many other sushi or poke options in Decatur if you eat fish raw. If you like it cooked, maybe the tastes aren't so noticeable but maybe you'd worry about...
Read moreSushi Avenue made me happy!
It wasn't very crowded on a Saturday afternoon and I was seated at the bar. I got here hungry and left full!!! The menu has detailed with pictures of the different sushi rolls and their ingredients. However, there are no prices! I think it goes from least expensive to most as the Crab roll I ordered was near the beginning and the White roll was in the middle. Either way they were both delicious!! I am a big fan of crab rolls and for $4.75 these were packed tight with lots of crab salad and big!! Both rolls were eight pieces each and large! The white roll and all its fish were fresh and yummy!! I also ordered shrimp shumai which came out four in the steam basket. They were a little dry but biting into whole shrimps made it all better. My white roll was $12.00 and well worth it so the prices not being listed are not so bad. You are getting a quality roll for sure! The sushi chef made sure to check on me and the waitress was attentive so no problems customer service wise. They have different beers as my friend ordered an IPA which I have not found to be common in a sushi spot, so that is definitely another plus. I will be going back to Sushi Avenue...
