Generally speaking, I love Biggby's. The one downtown (on Ottawa) is my favourite, but I like most of them-- but almost without exception, I cannot stand the ones owned by a franchise licensee named Moe (his nickname). This outpost is, sadly, one of them. It's especially sad because it's the closest one to my house.
This Biggby's is perpetually out of something-- grande cups, caramel sauce, espresso beans (yes, even bloody espresso beans, from time to time). This is true of most of Moe's Biggby coffee shops, because he is constantly trading stock among them. When the Grand River shop is out of lids, they run to the MSU Union shop and borrow some. Oh, but then like, two days later, the MSU Union is out of lids. But no more have come into the Grand River shop, so they have to run to the one on Michigan and borrow some from them. And so on.
It's a terrible way to run a business-- completely unsustainable, yet Moe pulls in money hand over fist because Biggby Coffee is wildly popular in mid-Michigan.
I feel very badly for the baristas who have to staff these places. They are the ones who take guff from patrons because their owner is useless as a manager. He never bothers to update these locations, either. Go to almost any non-Moe Biggby and you will find that they have a unique flavor: standard Biggby colours, perhaps, but paired with a unique layout, a special picture window, wood floors, snowflake murals in the wintertime. Not so with this location: same horrible muzak, same tables, carpeting, and wall art. Same overworked staff (required to work on Thanksgiving, even-- oh hell no). Nevertheless, the staff is friendly and fast, it must be said-- that single star is for them. They deserve more, but this coffee shop does not, overall.
Despite my soft spot for amiable, minimum wage baristas, this particular Biggby is on...
Read moreI come to this location every week..most of the staff know my order. I always tip. Today, I stopped in, got in line, there were 2 people ahead of me. 1 person was at the other end of the counter. Shortly after me getting there, another lady came in and was standing at the other end of the counter(pick up area) more people had come in and got in line behind me. After a while the employee asked the lady that was standing at (pick up side) if she was trying to order. She nodded yes then employee told her line was where the rest of us were standing. She moved close to us but did not get In line. Employee finally waited on the 2 people in front of me. As I walked up to place my order the employee stopped me and let other lady cut in front of all of us. I had already been waiting for a long time. I won't be back. I will detour on the way to my appointments now to...
Read moreI went there the other night, and the Baritas working were very RUDE! I asked the young lady if she knew how to make a drink that wasn't very common, her reply was "we have a book to tell us" in a very unpleasing tone. At first I asked for a tall, but then changed my mind and asked for the next size up, the young man said no problem and when he told the young lady, rudely once more the told him NO, then looked at me. The manger Paul is also very rude. Makes me feel unwelcome every time I come in to get a coffee, and my friends as well. I don't think he should be running the store if he can't lead by example the proper way. There is only two people that work there that do make me feel welcome, and are nice, friendly people. Not to mention, the coffee is starting to taste worse and worse every...
